The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was introduced in 1980 as the first model in the SZ series, and was the long-wheelbase version of the Silver Spirit. The Spirit was the first car with the retractable Spirit of Ecstasy - a spring-loaded Mascot that sank into the radiator shell if dislodged from its position.

Both the Spirit and Spur retained the basic design of the Silver Shadow and was powered by its 6.7-liter V8 engine backed by a GM-sourced THM 400 3-speed automatic transmission. Both the Spirt and Spur had a self-leveling suspension from the previous model Silver Shadow, though in this application using a Girling automatic hydraulic ride height control system and gas-charged shock absorbers.

The Spirit / Spur continued Rolls-Royce's tradition of evolution rather than revolution. Though based on the Silver Shadow II, the Spirit / Spur had a lower waistline, a more modern angular appearance, increased glass area, and an interior that exemplified the Crewe firm's high standard for fit and finish.

The Limousine variant of the Silver Spur could be had in three varying stretched wheelbases: 14-in., 36-in., or 42-inches. Options included an electric sunroof over the passenger compartment, lady's vanity case in the rear armrest, curtains in the passenger compartment, a flag mast, and power rear seat.
