Vancouver is a city on the north bank of the Columbia River in the U.S. State of Washington. Incorporated in 1857, it is the fourth-largest city in the state, with a population of 161,791 as of April 1, 2010 census. Vancouver is the county seat of Clark County and forms part of the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area, the 24th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Originally established in 1825 around Fort Vancouver, a fur trading outpost, the city is located on the Washington-Oregon border along the Columbia River, directly north of Portland. In 2005, Money magazine named it No. 91 on its list of best places in America to live. In 2015, WalletHub ranks Vancouver the 60th best place to live for families in US.

Etymology

Vancouver shares its name with the larger city of Vancouver in southern British Columbia, Canada. Both cities were named after sea captain George Vancouver, but the American city is older; Vancouver, B.C. was incorporated 29 years after the incorporation of Vancouver, Washington and more than 60 years after the name Vancouver was first used in reference to the historic Fort Vancouver trading post on the Columbia River. City officials have periodically suggested changing the U.S. city's name to Fort Vancouver to reduce confusion with its larger and better-known northern neighbor. Many Pacific Northwest residents distinguish between the two cities by referring to the Canadian city as "Vancouver, B.C." and the United States city as "Vancouver, Washington," or "Vancouver, USA." Local nicknames include: "Vantucky" (though the nickname is often used as a derogatory term)" and "The 'Couv(e)". In 2013, the nickname "Vansterdam" surfaced as a result of the legalization of marijuana in the state of Washington. This nickname has also long been used to refer to Vancouver, B.C., as well. This name is a clear reference to the cannabis-legal city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Vancouver is an Amtrak train station in Vancouver, Washington, United States. The station is served by the Cascades, Coast Starlight, and Empire Builder trains.

It is a unique, two-sided station situated in a "wye", where passengers board the Empire Builder on the southeast side of the station while the Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight are boarded on the northwest side of the station. The station building is now open after extensive interior renovations.

Of the 19 Washington stations served by Amtrak, Vancouver was the third busiest in FY14.

Service

Although the Amtrak Cascades runs between Eugene, Oregon and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, there is no train that starts at one terminus and ends at the other. However, each day eight Amtrak Cascades trains (four northbound and four southbound) stop at the Vancouver, Washington Station. The Coast Starlight and Empire Builder have simpler, less frequent schedules. The Coast Starlightruns daily in each direction between Los Angeles, California and Seattle. The Empire Builderruns daily in each direction between Chicago, Illinois and Portland, Oregon. After having split in Spokane, part of the Empire Builder train continues on to Seattle--this part does not pass through or stop at the Vancouver, Washington Station. (The next northbound stop on both the Amtrak Cascades and the Coast Starlight is in Kelso and the next southbound stop is in Portland, Oregon. The next westbound stop on the Empire Builder is also in Portland and next eastbound stop is in Bingen.)

Vancouver (ⁱ/væŋˈkuːvər/ or /vænˈkuːvər/) officially the City of Vancouver, is a coastal seaport city on the mainland of British Columbia, Canada.

The 2011 census recorded 603,502 people in the city, making it the eighth largest Canadian municipality. The Greater Vancouver area of around 2.4 million inhabitants is the third most populous metropolitan area in the country, the second largest city on the United States–Canada border, and the most populous in Western Canada. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. Vancouver is classed as a Beta global city. The City of Vancouver encompasses a land area of about 114 square kilometres, giving it a population density of about 5,249 people per square kilometre (13,590 per square mile). Vancouver is the most densely populated Canadian municipality, and the fourth most densely populated city with over 250,000 residents in North America, behind New York City, San Francisco, and Mexico City.

Vancouver was a steam-run bark built and operated by the Hudson's Bay Company to serve on the route between London, England and Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island in what is now the province of British Columbia, Canada. Other vessels committed to the route were Columbia and Cowlitz, but Vancouver was the first of the three to enter Victoria harbour, and the first vessel to sail directly from England to enter that port, in 1845. Other vessels in the company's service were Nereid and Cadboro.

Vancouver was 324 tons burthen, and had six guns and a crew of 24 men.
