An "underdog" is a person or group in a competition, usually in sports and creative works, who is popularly expected to lose. The party, team, or individual expected to win is called the favorite or top dog. In the case where an underdog wins, the outcome is an upset. An "underdog bet" is a bet on the underdog or outsider for which the odds are generally higher.

The first recorded uses of the term occurred in the second half of the nineteenth century; its first meaning was "the beaten dog in a fight".

Lengths of time

In Classical architecture a term or terminal figure (plural: terms or termini) is a human head and bust that continues as a square tapering pillar-like form.

The name derives from Terminus, the Roman god of boundaries and boundary markers. If the bust is of Hermes as protector of boundaries in ancient Greek culture, with male genitals interrupting the plain base at the appropriate height, it may be called a herma or herm. The crime of Alcibiades and his drinking-mates, for which Socrates eventually indirectly paid with his life, was the desecration of herm figures through Athens in the dead of night.

At the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Lady of Ephesus, whom the Greeks identified with Artemis, was a many-breasted goddess encased in a tapering term, from which her feet protruded. (See illustration at Temple of Artemis).

In the architecture and the painted architectural decoration of the European Renaissance and the succeeding Classical styles, term figures are quite common. Often they represent minor deities associated with fields and vineyards and the edges of woodland, Pan and fauns and Bacchantes especially, and they may be draped with garlands of fruit and flowers.

In analogy to natural language, where a noun phrase refers to an object and a whole sentence refers to a fact, in mathematical logic, a term denotes a mathematical object and a formula denotes a mathematical fact. In particular, terms appear as components of a formula.

A first-order term is recursively constructed from constant symbols, variables and function symbols. An expression formed by applying a predicate symbol to an appropriate number of terms is called an atomic formula, which evaluates to true or false in bivalent logics, given an interpretation. For example, is a term built from the constant 1, the variable x, and the binary function symbols and ; it is part of the atomic formula which evaluates to true for each real-numbered value of x.

Besides in logic, terms play important roles in universal algebra, and rewriting systems.

Elementary mathematics

In the context of polynomials, sometimes term is used for a monomial with a coefficient: to 'collect like terms' in a polynomial is the operation of making it a linear combination of distinct monomials. Terms, in this sense, are things that are added or subtracted. A series is often represented as the sum of a sequence of terms. Individual factors in an expression representing a product are multiplicative terms. For example, in 6 + 3x − 2, 6, 3x, and −2 are all terms.

"Underdog" is the second single by UK rock band You Me At Six written by Sam Moss, to be released from their second album: Hold Me Down. "Underdog" was released on 8 February 2010 and charted at a peak of #49 on the UK Singles Chart, marking the band's sixth most successful single to date. The single was added to BBC Radio 1's A Playlist during January 2010.

Music video

The music video for Underdog was shot at Brixton Academy in December 2009 and was directed by Nick Bartlett.

The music video is a mix of performance shots and a storyline where a ballerina is cheated on by her boyfriend with someone else. The ballerina then performs a routine. When she returns she kisses her boyfriend in front of the one he cheated with, who leaves. The ballerina then walks away, leaving him with no girl.

"Underdog" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 11 on 14 February 2010, narrowly missing out of the Top 10, but marking the band's third most successful single behind "Finders Keepers" and "Kiss And Tell" which peaked at number 3 and 2 in May and September 2009 respectively. "Underdog" also marks the bands' fifth Top 10 single to date. On its second week in the chart, the single fell 42 places to number 53, before falling out the following week.

Underdog is an American animated television series that debuted October 3, 1964, on the NBC network under the primary sponsorship of General Mills and continued in syndication until 1973 (although production of new episodes ceased in 1967), for a run of 124 episodes.

Underdog, Shoeshine Boy's heroic alter ego, appears whenever love interest Sweet Polly Purebred is being victimized by such villains as Simon Bar Sinister or Riff Raff. Underdog nearly always speaks in rhyming couplets, as in "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" His voice was supplied by Wally Cox.

History

In 1959, handling the General Mills account as an account executive with the Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising agency in New York, W. Watts Biggers teamed with Chet Stover, Treadwell D. Covington, and artist Joe Harris in the creation of television cartoon shows to sell breakfast cereals for General Mills. The shows introduced such characters as King Leonardo, Tennessee Tuxedo, and Underdog. Biggers and Stover contributed both scripts and songs to the series. When Underdog became a success, Biggers and his partners left Dancer Fitzgerald Sample to form their own company, Total Television, with animation produced at Gamma Studios in Mexico. In 1969, Total Television folded when General Mills dropped out as the primary sponsor (but continued to retain the rights to the series until 1995; however, they still own TV distribution rights through The Program Exchange).
