James Timothy "Tim" Hardin (December 23, 1941 – December 29, 1980) was an American folk musician and composer. He wrote the Top 40 hit "If I Were a Carpenter", covered by, among others, Bobby Darin, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, The Four Tops, Robert Plant, and Johnny Rivers; his song "Reason to Believe" has also been covered by many artists, notably Rod Stewart (who had a chart hit with the song), Neil Young, and The Carpenters. Hardin is also known for his own recording career.
Early life and career
Hardin was born in Eugene, Oregon and attended South Eugene High School. He dropped out of high school at age 18 to join the Marine Corps. Hardin is said to have discovered heroin while posted to the far east.
After his discharge he moved to New York City in 1961, where he briefly attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was dismissed due to truancy and began to focus on his musical career by performing around Greenwich Village, mostly in a blues style.
After moving to Boston in 1963 he was discovered by the record producer Erik Jacobsen (later the producer for The Lovin' Spoonful), who arranged a meeting with Columbia Records. In 1964 he moved back to Greenwich Village to record for his contract with Columbia. The resulting recordings were not released and Columbia terminated Hardin's recording contract.
Tim Hardin 1 is the debut album by folk artist Tim Hardin, released in 1966 on Verve Records.
History
Tim Hardin 1 contains one of his most well-known and frequently covered songs, "Reason to Believe" — most notably a hit by Rod Stewart in 1971. Some of the songs were demos that ended up on the final release. Hardin was reportedly displeased with the string arrangements added after principal recording was completed.
The album cover was shot in the garden of "The Castle" where Bob Dylan was staying during that time. The cover and all the photos on the back were taken by Lisa Law. One of the outtakes of this album shoot was used for Hardin's last album as well as he died the day Law was to photograph him for his new album, Hang On to a Dream.
Tim Hardin 1 was re-released on CD in 1998 by Repertoire along with Tim Hardin 2.
Reception
Allmusic stated in their review: "Tim Hardin 1 is one of the most powerful and compelling records of its era (...) The result is a seminal folk-rock album, every bit as exciting and urgent as it was in 1966, and as important a creative effort as Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited. And this wasn't even Hardin's best album, though it set the pattern for everything he did after."
Tim Hardin 4 is an album by folk artist Tim Hardin, released in 1969.
These early audition recordings done for Columbia in 1964 (which were ultimately rejected at that time) were not issued until 1969. The songs are in a straight blues style. A similar release was done by Atco on This is Tim Hardin.
Reception
In his review for Allmusic, music critic Jim Newsom wrote "... the album holds some interest as a historical document... This is not essential listening by any means, but it's pleasant enough to hear on a lazy, cloud-covered afternoon."
