"Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" (commonly titled "What's My Name?") is the solo debut single by American West Coast hip hop recording artist Snoop Dogg, then known as Snoop Doggy Dogg. Was released on October 30, 1993 as the first single from his debut album, Doggystyle, with the record labels Death Row Records, Interscope Records, Atlantic Records. The song, produced by Dr. Dre, features samples and interpolations from George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" in its chorus and throughout, and an interpolation from Parliament's "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)" in its bridge. The song's intro contains a sample from The Counts' "Pack of Lies." A vocal sample ("the bomb") from Parliament's "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" can be heard throughout. The bass line may be an interpretation of the one from Funkadelic's "(Not Just) Knee Deep". It was ranked number 456 on NME's 500 greatest songs of all time.

Background

The massively acclaimed single features many of the conventional topics found in the gangsta rap genre, as Snoop Doggy Dogg, with the laconic, laid-back drawl he became famous for, raps about his involvement with gang crime, killing, drugs, parties, sex and black-on-black shootings. However, the song adopts a more 'funky' tune, (as seen across much of Snoop and Dr. Dre's earlier work). The single quickly became a hugely successful hit, and is recognised as one of Snoop Dogg's "greatest pieces".

What's My Name? was a 30-minute radio program in the United States. The program was among the first radio shows to offer cash prizes to contestants. Some sources also consider it "a precursor of the television show What's My Line?"

Format

Contestants on What's My Name? had to identify a person from a maximum of 10 clues given by the show's two hosts. People to be identified were celebrities and historical characters. In the show's early days, a correct guess on the first clue earned the contestant $10; the amount earned dropped by $1 with each additional clue. In 1948, the top prize was increased to $100, with $50 and $25 prizes, respectively, for identification on the second and third clues.

The program also involved listener participation to some extent, as listeners could send in questions to be used on the air. People who submitted questions received $10 for each question used.

A review of the first episode of What's My Name? offered little hope for its future, calling it "a rather drab show." The reviewer explained: "The program got off to a bad start in that the participants, for the most part, were unable to guess the identities of the characters asked for in the game until long after the listeners got the drift of the proceedings." The reviewer did, however, note that the show was "ably conducted by Bud Hulick and Arlene Francis."

In Nuh, the 71st surah, the Quran refers to Nuh’s prophethood in snippets. Nuh is a messenger of God. When Nuh realizes the messages are not accepted by the community, he supplicated to God. God planned to flood the community of Nuh at a specificied time. God commanded Nuh to warn the people of the flood. God brings forth the water from the skies to prove Nuh’s message to be accurate. In the Quran, the flood is a symbolization of the mercy of God to the believers. God gives the world a new beginning. The disbelievers disbelieved God's message and messenger Nuh so they were drowned. Because his people are unable to grasp the idea of the existence of one God, the lives of Muhammad and Nuh are parallel to each other for the time of the revelation of this surah. The surah was used to increase the faith of the believers; it shows that Nuh before Muhammad had difficulties in dealing with the disbelievers of his time.
