Richard Allen Street (October 5, 1942 – February 27, 2013) was an American soul and R&B singer, most notable as a member of Motown vocal group The Temptations from 1971 to 1993. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Street was the first member of the Temptations to actually be a native of the city which served as Motown's namesake and hometown; all of the previous members were born and at least partially raised in the southern United States.
Career
Otis Williams & the Distants
Street was the lead singer of an early Temptations predecessor, Otis Williams & the Distants, and takes the spotlight on their local hit "Come On". The Distants also included future Temptations Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Elbridge "Al" Bryant, who left The Distants and their record deal with Johnnie Mae Matthews' Northern Records to form The Elgins (later The Temptations) with Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. After their departure, Matthews had Street briefly lead a new Distants group in the early 1960s.
Richard Street is a station on the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) located east of Garfield Avenue adjacent to Bayside Park in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey. There are two tracks and an island platform.
Service
Direct southbound service travels through Bayonne where it terminates at 8th Street.
Direct northbound service travels to Hoboken Terminal, where connection to PATH to midtown Manhattan and to commuter trains are available. The line travels via Liberty State Park, where transfer to the West Side Branch is available, and Downtown Jersey City. Connections to the PATH Newark–World Trade Center line and the Paulus Hook Ferry Terminal are available at Exchange Place.
Continuing northbound service to Hoboken and North Hudson, (at the Weehawken waterfront, Bergenline and the Tonnelle Avenue terminus) requires a transfer at stations between Liberty State Park and Pavonia-Newport.
History
The station opened on April 22, 2000. It is located along the former Central Railroad of New Jersey right of way, which terminated at Communipaw Terminal. During excavations for its construction, workers came across what appear to be the petrified remains of luggage, which were also found at nearby Danforth Avenue stop.
