Sir Richard Owen FRS KCB (20 July 1804 – 18 December 1892) was an English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist. Despite being a controversial figure, Owen is generally considered to have been an outstanding naturalist with a remarkable gift for interpreting fossils.

Owen produced a vast array of scientific work, but is probably best remembered today for coining the word Dinosauria (meaning "Terrible Reptile" or "Fearfully Great Reptile"). Owen is also remembered for his outspoken opposition to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. He agreed with Darwin that evolution occurred, but thought it was more complex than outlined in Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Owen's approach to evolution can be seen as having anticipated the issues that have gained greater attention with the recent emergence of evolutionary developmental biology. Owen is also known for his campaign for the natural specimens in the British Museum to be given a new home. This resulted in the establishment, in 1881, of the now world-famous Natural History Museum in South Kensington, London.Bill Bryson argues that, "by making the Natural History Museum an institution for everyone, Owen transformed our expectations of what museums are for".

Richard Dale Owen (January 6, 1810 – March 25, 1890) was an American geologist and soldier. An officer in the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War, Owen taught for fifteen years at Indiana University and briefly served as Purdue University's first president.

Early life

The youngest son of social reformer Robert Owen, Richard Owen was born on January 6, 1810, in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He received his early education from a private tutor and from the New Lanark grammar schools. He was sent to Hofwyl, Switzerland, to study chemistry and physics at Philipp Emanuel von Fellenberg's school. After returning to Scotland, Owen continued his scientific education under Andrew Ure at Anderson's Institution (now the University of Strathclyde) at Glasgow. In 1828, Owen arrived in the United States, where his father had established a utopian experiment in New Harmony, Indiana. During the Mexican–American War, Owen was stationed in Monterrey overseeing provision trains as a captain from April 1847 until August 1848.

Richard Owen (born 25 April 1990 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, England) is a rugby league footballer for the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in the European Super League. He previously played for Castleford Tigers, and also played for Featherstone Lions, and Westgate Redoubt in his youth. Owen's position of choice is on the wing, but he can also operate at full-back.

Owen made an impressive start to his Super League career for Castleford in 2008 - scoring 13 tries in 24 games. Due to the team suffering some key injuries he was moved to the wing and formed a good partnership with Michael Shenton towards the end of that year.

Owen played mainly at full back for the Tigers in 2009 where he showed some excellent form.

In round three of 2010 Richie suffered a badly broken leg against the Bradford Bulls.

After signing a new two-year deal for the Tigers in 2010, Owen made a try scoring return for his club in a round eight victory over Hull FC.

In May 2014, Owen joined Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on loan until the end of the season. In October 2014, he joined Wakefield on a permanent deal, signing a three-year contract.

The Ven Richard Henry Owen was Archdeacon of St Asaph from 1964 to 1970.

He was born in 1899 and educated at the University of Wales and ordained in 1921. He began his career as a Curate in Colwyn Bay. After this he held incumbencies at Llantysilio, Bangor-on-Dee, Rhosymedre and Prestatyn and finally St John's Church, Trofarth.

He died on 19 August 1977.

Life and judicial career

Born to an opera-loving attorney, Owen grew up in New York, New York. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, and then received an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1945. He received an LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1950, and entered private practice in New York City from 1950 to 1953. He was also an assistant professor at New York Law School from 1951 to 1953. In 1953, Owen became an assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, also serving as a special assistant U.S. attorney general in 1954. He was a senior trial attorney in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice from 1955-58. He returned to private practice in New York City from 1958 to 1974, also working as associate counsel to the New York State Commission on Alcoholic Beverage Laws from 1963-64.
