Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) is a 965-bed hospital with campuses in New Brunswick, and Somerville, New Jersey, and serves as the flagship hospital of Robert Wood Johnson Health System.

RWJUH New Brunswick is the flagship Cancer Hospital of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the principal hospital of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Its Centers of Excellence include cardiovascular care from minimally invasive heart surgery to transplantation, cancer care, and women’s and children’s care including The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at RWJUH, which has several areas of pediatric care. The hospital is also a Level 1 Trauma Center and serves as a national resource in its ground-breaking approaches to emergency preparedness.

History

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital was founded as the New Brunswick City Hospital in 1884, but it changed its name to the John Wells Memorial Hospital in 1889 when community leader and volunteer Grace Tileston Wells donated a building at the corner of Somerset and Division streets in honor of her late husband, John Wells. That first small building was expanded in 1916 to accommodate the growing area and renamed Middlesex General Hospital. In 1958, an addition to the hospital was built that housed the first vascular lab in New Jersey, an intensive care unit, cardiopulmonary lab, a 13-room operating suite, and increased the number of beds by 287. At this time, the Department of Clinical Research was established, X-ray technician training began, and the hospital auxiliary was founded.

A teaching hospital is a hospital or medical center that provides clinical education and training to future and current health professionals. Teaching hospitals are often affiliated with medical schools and work closely with medical students throughout their period of matriculation, and especially during their clerkship (internship) years. In most cases, teaching hospitals also offer Graduate Medical Education (GME)/ physician residency programs, where medical school graduates train under a supervising (attending) physician to assist with the coordination of care.

In addition to offering medical education to medical students and physician residents, many teaching hospitals also serve as research institutes.

History

Although institutions for caring for the sick are known to have existed much earlier in history, the first teaching hospital, where students were authorized to methodically practice on patients under the supervision of physicians as part of their education, was reportedly the Academy of Gundishapur in the Persian Empire during the Sassanid era.

University Hospital is a non-profit 581-bed private hospital located in downtown Augusta, Georgia. Established in 1818, it is the second-oldest hospital in Georgia. Although University Hospital is considered a teaching institution, it does not currently sponsor an academic program resulting in a degree. University Hospital is no longer directly affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia or Georgia Regents University. University Hospital is a fully private hospital receiving no local or state funding.

In addition to its main hospital campus, the University Health System has outpatient medical offices and imaging centers servicing the surrounding 25-county region comprising the CSRA (Georgia and South Carolina). University Health System boasts a wide variety of primary care and specialty physicians such as Endocrinology, Oncology, Neuroscience, Heart and Vascular, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology. One of the newest additions to the health system is a 25-bed medical center located in McDuffie County offers residents medical and health services for people of the surrounding area.

University Hospital is an American medical drama that aired from January 16 until May 1, 1995. It was part of a syndicated package of shows called the Spelling Premiere Network.

Robert Wood "General" Johnson II (April 4, 1893 – January 30, 1968) was an American businessman. He was one of the sons of Robert Wood Johnson I (co-founder of Johnson & Johnson). He turned the family business into one of the world's largest healthcare corporations.

Early life

Johnson was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His father was Robert Wood Johnson I, co-founder of Johnson & Johnson, and his mother was Evangeline Brewster Armstrong Johnson. Johnson grew up with three siblings: Roberta Johnson, John Seward Johnson I, and Evangeline Johnson. When he was sixteen, their father died, leaving him an estate of $2,000,000. He attended the prestigious Rutgers Preparatory School before dropping out to start working full-time at J&J. This gave him an insight into the workings of the company for the rest of his life.

Career

Johnson became vice president at J&J in 1918. Johnson also had an abiding interest in politics, and served a term as the Mayor of Highland Park, New Jersey. He was elected president of Johnson & Johnson from 1932–1938, and became chairman of the board of J&J in 1938. Johnson also held a reserve commission in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps during the 1930s. At the outbreak of World War II, Johnson's work in identifying products needed by the war effort resulted in the Permacell division of J&J inventing duct tape for sealing ammunition boxes. J&J plant managers simply took their existing cloth medical adhesive tape, added a waterproof plastic layer with a more aggressive adhesive, and produced it in olive drab (OD) green to match the ammunition cans. During the war, J&J would become a major supplier for combat first aid kits and other military supplies. In 1941, Johnson started the Ethicon subsidiary.
