Pelorus (from the Latin "Pelorus", meaning "keeping on course") is the world's nineteenth largest luxury yacht at 115 metres (377 ft) in length, currently owned by David Geffen.

History

Commissioned by a Saudi Arabian businessman, Pelorus was built at the Lürssen yard in Bremen, Germany to the design of Tim Heywood and launched in 2003. It was sold to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2004. Abramovich had it refitted by Blohm & Voss, adding a second helicopter pad (forward), four zero-speed stabilizers, and modifications to the exhaust, mast, and stern.

Pelorus is powered by two 5,500-hp Wärtsilä 12v 26 engines with a maximum speed of 19 knots, but often cruises between 12 to 14 knots. Details about the interiors are scant, as Abramovich was protective of his family's privacy and highly security conscious. The yacht has a number of tenders on board and a garage full of 'toys', including jet skis.

While owned by Abramovich, the yacht had a full-time crew of up to 46, in addition to a large security contingent that traveled with his family. Pelorus would cruise the Western Mediterranean during the summers, and commonly ventured down through the Suez for the winters. In 2005, Abramovich lent Pelorus to Frank Lampard and John Terry for two weeks as a bonus for being the two best players at his English football club Chelsea F.C. the previous season, and allowed Terry to honeymoon with his new wife, Toni Poole, on the yacht in 2007.

Historical significance

In marine navigation, a pelorus is a reference tool for maintaining bearing of a vessel at sea. It is a "dumb compass" without a directive element, suitably mounted and provided with vanes to permit observation of relative bearings.

Modern use

In appearance and use, a pelorus resembles a compass or compass repeater, with sighting vanes or a sighting telescope attached, but it has no directive properties. That is, it remains at any relative direction to which it is set. It is generally used by setting 000° at the lubber's line. Relative bearings are then observed. They can be converted to bearings true, magnetic, grid, etc., by adding the appropriate heading. The direct use of relative bearings is sometimes of value. A pelorus is useful, for instance, in determining the moment at which an aid to navigation is broad on the beam. It is also useful in measuring pairs of relative bearings which can be used to determine distance off and distance abeam of a navigational aid.

A yacht /ˈjɒt/ is a recreational boat or ship. The term originates from the Dutch word jacht "hunt", and was originally defined as a light fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. After its selection by Charles II of England as the vessel to carry him to England from the Netherlands for his restoration in 1660, it came to be used to mean a vessel used to convey important persons.

Modern use of the term designates two different classes of watercraft, sailing and power boats. Yachts differ from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose, and it was not until the rise of the steamboat and other types of powerboat that sailing vessels in general came to be perceived as luxury, or recreational vessels. Later the term came to encompass motor boats for primarily private pleasure purposes as well.

Yacht lengths generally range from 10 metres (33 ft) up to dozens of meters (hundreds of feet). A luxury craft smaller than 12 metres (39 ft) is more commonly called a cabin cruiser or simply a cruiser. A superyacht generally refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 24 m (79 ft) and a megayacht generally refers to any yacht over 50 metres (164 ft). This size is small in relation to typical cruise liners and oil tankers.

Yacht (stylized as YACHT, Y△CHT or Y▲CHT) is an American band from Portland, Oregon, currently based in Los Angeles, California. The core group consists of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, but expands to include Rob "Bobby Birdman" Kieswetter and Jeffrey Brodsky as touring members.

Yacht has released albums on States Rights Records, Marriage Records, DFA Records, and Downtown Records.

History

Early history

Bechtolt chose the name Yacht in reference to Y.A.C.H.T., an alternative school in Portland, Oregon. Bechtolt told Spin, "It stands for Young Americans Challenging High Technology. It refers to an education program that was held in Portland, Oregon. I was enrolled when I was 16, back in 1996."

2002–2008

Yacht was Bechtolt's solo project from 2002 to 2008. During this period, he released three albums, Super Warren MMIV, Mega and I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real, on record labels in the Pacific Northwest area.
