A secret service describes a government agency, intelligence agency, or the activities of a government agency, concerned with the gathering of intelligence data. The tasks and powers of a secret service can vary greatly from one country to another. For instance, a country may establish a secret service which has some policing powers (such as surveillance) but not others. The powers and duties of a government organization may be partly secret and partly not. The organization may be said to operate openly at home and secretly abroad, or vice versa. Secret police and intelligence agencies can usually be considered secret services.

The French police officer Joseph Fouché is sometimes regarded as the primary pioneer within secret intelligence. Among other things, he is alleged to have prevented several murder attempts on Napoleon during his time as First Consul Bonaparte (1799-1804) through a large and tight net of various informers.

For instance, the KGB were a form of secret police.

Secret Service is a budget-title first-person tactical shooter computer game released in 2001. The title's disclaimer states that it is in no way affiliated with or approved by the United States Secret Service.

Premise

The player is an American Secret Service agent who must complete 16 single player missions. You start out as a rookie protecting government officials. As you gain experience from completing the operations, you will be assigned higher profile missions. The final mission is protecting the President of the United States.

Gameplay

Secret Service is a first-person tactical shooter, similar to the Rainbow Six computer game series. Players must progress through a mission while accomplishing various mission objectives, such as eliminating terrorists or protecting dignitaries.

The combat in Secret Service is slightly more forgiving than in many other tactical shooters, as the player can survive several bullet hits before dying (assuming they are equipped with heavy body armor), as opposed to dying after only 1 or 2 shots like in many other tactical shooters.

Rear Admiral Mark Anderson CB is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines.

Naval career

Educated at the University of Manchester, Anderson joined the Royal Navy in 1974 and was appointed commanding officer of the submarine HMS Talent in 1993. He became Military Assistant to the Chief of Defence Logistics in May 2000, Commanding Officer of the frigate HMS Marlborough as well as Captain of the 4th Frigate Squadron in August 2002 and Director Equipment Capability (Underwater Effects) in March 2003 before moving on to become the Chief of the Defence Staff's Liaison Officer to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in July 2007 and Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines in January 2009. He retired from the Royal Navy in March 2011.

In retirement he became Strategy Director of Sonar & Undersea Systems and then Group Marketing Director at Ultra Electronics.
