Santa Ynez Airport (IATA: SQA, ICAO: KIZA, FAA LID: IZA) is a public airport located one mile (2 km) southeast of the central business district of Santa Ynez, in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, California. The airport covers 125 acres (51 ha) and has one runway.

History

The Santa Ynez Airport was started in 1946 when a group of men from the Santa Ynez Valley asked the board of supervisors to purchase 155 acres in the valley to start a flying club. It wasn't until September 30^th, 1949 that the State of California, Division of Aeronautics issued the first permit allowing for flight operations to commence.

As of 2014, the airport serves three main functions. Private aircraft owners use it as a hub for storing their plane as well as for refueling. Second, it boast one of the best gliding locations in Southern California. Finally, it serves as the staging ground for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department helicopters.

The town of Santa Ynez is one of the communities of the Santa Ynez Valley. It features the Santa Ynez Airport for general aviation, with a paved 2804 x 75 foot runway. The population was 4,418 at the 2010 census, down from 4,584 at the 2000 census. It is named after Saint Agnes, Santa Ynez in the Spanish language.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13 km²), 99.86% of it land, and 0.14% of it covered by water. Santa Ynez is located about 40 miles north of Santa Barbara, California, and is known for its world-class wineries.

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Santa Ynez has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.
