A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion. The crack of a supersonic bullet passing overhead or the crack of a bullwhip are examples of a sonic boom in miniature.
When an aircraft passes through the air it creates a series of pressure waves in front of it and behind it, similar to the bow and stern waves created by a boat. These waves travel at the speed of sound, and as the speed of the object increases, the waves are forced together, or compressed, because they cannot get out of the way of each other. Eventually they merge into a single shock wave, which travels at the speed of sound, a critical speed known as Mach 1, and is approximately 1,225 km/h (761 mph) at sea level and 20 °C (68 °F).
In smooth flight, the shock wave starts at the nose of the aircraft and ends at the tail. Because the different radial directions around the aircraft's direction of travel are equivalent (given the "smooth flight" condition), the shock wave forms a Mach cone, similar to a vapour cone, with the aircraft at its tip. The half-angle between direction of flight and the shock wave is given by:

Sonic Boom (ソニック・ブーム, Sonikku Būmu) is a 1987 vertical scrolling shooter arcade game created by Sega.
The player, piloting an airplane fighter, begins with a single gun (as with most scrolling shooters) and can power up by collecting power ups dropped by certain colored enemies. The power ups can add a ship to the fighter's left and right sides and increase shot power and range. They can also drop bombs, which can wipe out all weak enemies on screen and do massive damage to stronger enemies.
Sonic Boom was ported to the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. Some ports were considered worse than others due to their gameplay differences.
Sonic Boom received mixed to negative reviews.
Crash had said that it plays very much like Flying Shark and "doesn't offer anything that hasn't already been seen".
The Games Machine rated the Atari ST version 79%, the Amiga version 78%, the ZX Spectrum version 76%, the Amstrad CPC version 37% and the Commodore 64 version 64%.
Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, known as Sonic Toon: Island Adventure (ソニックトゥーン アイランドアドベンチャー, Sonikku Tūn: Airando Adobenchā) in Japan, is a 2014 action-adventure video game published by Sega, developed by Sanzaru Games for the Nintendo 3DS. Along with its Wii U sibling Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Shattered Crystal is a spin-off of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and is a part of the new Sonic Boom franchise, which consists also of an animated television series, whose games serve as its prequels, and other media. The two games together formed the third and final part in Sega's exclusivity agreement with Nintendo, following Sonic Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games in 2013. Both games were released on November 11, 2014 in North America, on November 21 in Europe, and Japan on December 18, 2014. A sequel, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, is currently in development for release in 2016.
The game's backstory is explained in a comic tie-in included in the game: millennia ago, the evil serpentine cyborg, Lyric the Last Ancient, attempted to conquer the world using a powerful crystal. However, his fellow Ancients destroyed the crystal and detained him in stasis. In the present day, Lyric escaped from his imprisonment and began searching for the lost fragments of the crystal to obtain ultimate power. While working, Lyric was confronted by Shadow, whom he captured using a mind-controlling device. Meanwhile, after rescuing Sticks from a rockslide, Amy entered a set of ancient ruins to collect research. She finds a secret ancient language and manuscript detailing the history and whereabouts of the crystal, but while trying to decipher it, she is ambushed by Lyric, leading to the game's opening scene. When Amy disengages to contact Sonic, Lyric, taking advantage of the distraction, incapacitates and captures her.
Stitched up like a wounded soldier
Rain falls on my parade
Any time I get the nerve to ask her
It's two heartbeats too late
Guys in shiny ties and GQ hairdos
Play every angle right
Designer suits and foreign sport coupes
How am I supposed to fight
Shot one, my chance is done
Shot two, what's there to lose
Shot down, I should have known
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
People say I'm better off without her
She's way out of my league
She's a killer and I'm no contender
Gotta break this losing streak
I always see her at the in-crowd parties
I'll bet she's so bored like me
A hundred guys are lining up to meet her
Before I count to three
Shot one, my chance is done
Shot two, what's there to lose
Shot down, I should have known
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
One two three, go
Yeah
Shot one, my chance is done
Shot two, what's there to lose
Shot down, I should have known
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
I got shot down
Another night is blown
I got shot down
Lost to romeo
I got shot down
I guess I should have known
I got shot down
I got shot down
