Southport is a city in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River. It is part of the Wilmington, NC metropolitan area. Its population was 2,833 as of the 2010 census. While the town is relatively small, it receives many visitors and tourists.

Southport has been a popular filming location for television and movies, including film adaptations of the works of novelist Nicholas Sparks. The town can be seen in the television series Dawson's Creek, Under the Dome, Revenge, and Matlock, and in numerous movies, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Summer Catch, Domestic Disturbance, Crimes of the Heart, Nights in Rodanthe, A Walk to Remember and Safe Haven.

Southport is the location of the North Carolina Fourth of July Festival -- a large scale affair -- which attracts 40,000 to 50,000 visitors annually to enjoy the many things that are available; venders from around the country, crafts, wondrous fireworks, etc.

One additional fact about the popular vacationing site, is that what is usually represented of the town, is only a small part of southport, known to the locals residing there as "Old Southport", with its many historical houses and buildings. The rest of Southport, however, is practically the same as any other small town with the usual ammenties; chain restaurants, grocery stores, banks, medical care buildings, and drugstores.

North Carolina wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Wine has been produced in the area since the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. Wine growers in North Carolina were the first to cultivate a native American grape variety, the Scuppernong, which produces a sweet wine, examples of which are still being made in the state. Most wine produced in North Carolina since the year 2000 is made from Vitis vinifera grape varieties, although French hybrid and Vitis labrusca varieties remain common.

Wine industry

North Carolina ranks tenth in both grape and wine production in the United States. The state's wine industry continues to expand, and today is one of the United States’ five most visited state destinations for wine and culinary tourism. In 2007, North Carolina contained 55 wineries and 350 vineyards. By 2011, this had grown to more than 100 wineries and more than 400 vineyards.

Southport is a railroad station on the New Haven Line of the Metro-North Railroad. It serves Southport, a former borough in the town of Fairfield, Connecticut. It is one of three railroad stations in Fairfield, the others being Fairfield and Fairfield Metro. The station is nearly 49 miles (79 km) from Grand Central Terminal in New York City. The average travel time between Grand Central and Southport is one hour and twelve minutes, though this varies depending on the time of day and level of service. It has 179 parking spaces, 99 owned by the state.

History

The station was opened in 1884, and the existing westbound and eastbound station buildings were constructed in the late 19th century by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. The westbound building is wooden, built in the saltbox-style. The eastbound building is made of brick, and is no longer in railroad use. Instead, it houses a restaurant. In 1989, the station buildings were listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the "Southport Railroad Stations".

Southport is a small township in far south Tasmania, the most southern township in Australia (Cockle Creek is located further south, but it is not a gazetted town). The suburb of Southport had a population of 372 in 2011. It was settled in 1837 and grew to be the largest town south of Hobart; but a declining shipping industry slowly led to the town's shrinking population, and much of it has been destroyed by fire.

The constituency covers the whole town of Southport and the localities of Ainsdale, Birkdale, Blowick, Churchtown, Crossens, Highpark, Hillside, Kew, Marshside, Meols Cop, and Woodvale.

The constituency is bordered to the north by South Ribble, to the east by West Lancashire, and to the south by Sefton Central.
