Hampton School is an independent boys' day school in Hampton, London, England.

History

In 1557, Robert Hammond, a wealthy brewer who had acquired property in Hampton, left in his will provision for the maintenance of a 'free scole' and to build a small schoolhouse 'with seates in yt' in the churchyard of Hampton Church .

Although Hampton School was founded in 1557 there was provision in the will that the school would only continue as long as the vicar, churchwardens and parishioners carried out his requests. If not, then the properties would revert to his heirs. It seems that the school (in its first incarnation) did not survive beyond 1568, or possibly earlier, and the properties reverted to the heirs.

Subsequently, however, the school was re-opened in 1612. This was as a result of a Commission that was established to enquire into the fate of Tudor charities that had disappeared for various reasons in different parts of the country. The "learned counsell on bothe sides" reached a deadlock at the Commissioners. However, in the spirit of compromise and through the generosity of the then legal owner of the properties, Nicholas Pigeon, the school was re-endowed. The school has continued in various forms and in various buildings ever since.

Hampton School, also known as Hampton school for girls is an all-girls boarding school located in Malvern, Jamaica. It was founded in 1858 with the funds received from the will of plantation owners Caleb Dickenson and Hugh Munro.

School bio

The uniform consists of a light blue apron with a white blouse beneath it. The sixth form uniform consists of a royal blue skirt and a white blouse along with a navy blue tie.

There have been noteworthy improvements to the physical structure in the past few years. A modern residential block has been constructed, at a convenient distance from the original historic buildings. Officially, the new dorm is the Donna Parchment Boarding Complex, named for the present chairman of the school board.

Heather Murray has been Headmistress of Hampton from 2004 to the present.

The founders of the school also gave the money to form a boys school created two years before Hampton. This all-boys school is best known as Munro College and is the only all-boys boarding school left in the country of Jamaica. Their motto is "In arce sitam quis occultabit- A city upon a hill cannot be hid", This is in Latin exactly like Hampton's own "Suma virtute et humanitate- With utmost courage and courtesy" These schools are brother and sister schools and have always been involved in each other's activities. Their six form programs were similar as well where each school would send over some sixth formers to their brother/ sister school, however since September 2010 Munro no longer accepts Hampton 6th formers because there are more Hamptonians opting for the Sciences than Munro can accommodate. However, up to 2011 Hampton still accepts Munronians interested in pursuing careers in Business and Humanities (including Law).

History

New Hampton School was founded on June 27, 1821 as a Free Will Baptist-oriented, coeducational institution. On that day the State of New Hampshire issued a charter to the New Hampton Academy, "having had three several readings," before the House of Representatives. That charter, issued to William B. Kelley, Nathaniel Norris and Joshua Drake, provided the framework for the institution that would become the New Hampton School and emphasized the "promotion of science and the useful arts." From 1854 to 1870, the Cobb Divinity School was affiliated with the institute before moving to Bates College in Maine.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,571 people, 1,555 households, and 943 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,130.1 inhabitants per square mile (436.3/km²). There were 1,697 housing units at an average density of 537.0 per square mile (207.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.0% White, 0.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 2.5% from other races, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.9% of the population.
