Northern Exposure is an American television series that ran on CBS from 1990 to 1995, with a total of 110 episodes. The premise is a New York City physician, Dr. Joel Fleischman, is sent to practice in the town of Cicely, Alaska. Early episodes dealt with Fleischman's culture shock in the small town. While the show was nominally premised on the fish-out-of-water conflict between Fleischman's big city ways and the small-town mores of the Cicely residents, its focus shifted to dive more deeply into the quirky personalities of the eccentric townfolk.
The show was originally centered on Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), a newly minted physician from New York City. In order to pay for medical school, Fleischman had enrolled in a state run scholarship program which paid for his costs in exchange for a few years service at a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. Because the hospital was overstaffed he was instead re-located to treat an underserved community in the fictitious rural town of Cicely, where no medical clinic existed before his arrival. Fleischman resisted, claiming it to be illegal. However, the fine print of his contract supported such a placement. Hilarity ensues as the 'big city' young man learns to live and work in an environment completely foreign to him.
James Timothy "Tim" Holland, Jr. (born September 25, 1977), better known by his stage name Sole, is an American underground hip hop artist from Portland, Maine. He is one of eight co-founders of the record label Anticon. He has been a member of the groups Northern Exposure, Live Poets, Deep Puddle Dynamics, So-Called Artists, Da Babylonianz, Sole and the Skyrider Band and Waco Boyz.
Sole started listening to rap in 2nd/3rd grade after hearing a song in a movie which made him want to write raps himself. His cousin would emcee battle at elementary school recess and he would help her write over the phone, these being maybe the first rhymes he wrote. In middle school, a kid down the street had a karaoke machine and they would make loops by rewinding the tape. Around this time, Tim started going to open mics and people were impressed with how someone so young could rap so well and so fast. Others saw this as an opportunity and different deejays took him under their wing to help him get into studios.

I’ve seen it all, criss crossed five thousand miles
past rocky tips and sandy shores
I’ve lost some friends, but I bounced back again
from frozen wrecks on icy roads
And my friends all say I’ve lost another year
that it’s time to give it up and face my fears
But it’s not about the fun, it’s being proud of what
I’ve done
about having all the guts to do it here
I’ve seen it all, lived life on borrowed time
Past city blocks and gravel roads
I lost some friends, dropped out been on the mend
I climbed right back from no control
But I don’t know how much more that I can take
before my body gives and starts to break
But it’s not about the fun, it’s being proud of what
I’ve done
about having all the guts to do it here
Well I had it down, fought hard and now I’m found
but I’m wearing thin out on the road
And I’ve done the rounds, met girls in northern towns
but these days I’d rather sleep alone
But I don’t know how much more that I can take
before my body gives and starts to break
But it’s not about the fun, it’s being proud of what
I’ve done
about having all the guts to do it here
