Music for the Masses is the sixth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 28 September 1987 by Mute Records, and was supported by the Music for the Masses Tour.

Album development

Daniel Miller, who had produced Depeche Mode's previous album, voluntarily stepped away from production duties for this album, citing the growing tension in the studio that they had experienced during the recording of Black Celebration. With Miller's approval, the band co-produced the album with David Bascombe, who had previously worked as a recording engineer with Tears For Fears and Peter Gabriel.

Band members Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore both explained the album's title was conceived as a joke. Fletcher said, "The title's ... a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. Everyone is telling us we should make more commercial music, so that's the reason we chose that title." According to Gore, the title "was a joke on the uncommerciality of [the album]. It was anything but music for the masses!"

Music For The Masses (MFTM) is an annual concert held every summer in Lawrence, Kansas. Historically the concert has taken place at Burcham Park (200 Indiana Street) on the third Saturday in July. The artist line-up is usually acts from the local music scene; however, out of state acts have performed as well.

Music For The Masses 2005

MFTM started in 2005 as a concert to promote the local music scene. The event lasted all day July 23 (which also happened to be the hottest day of the year), with a total of 12 bands playing. There was no admission charge. Despite no admission charge the 2007 concert attendance was low. Concert organizer, Chris Armstrong, stated "I'll probably take a financial hit...." as the concert was taking place.

Music for the Mission (titled Music for the Masses until 2008) was a quiz night held annually in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia between 2003 and 2010. In 2007, it attracted 1,324 participants, making it at that time the largest single-venue quiz or trivia night ever held, according to Guinness World Records.

Overview

Music for the Mission was a music quiz/trivia night, contested by teams of up to 10 people. It was first held in 2003, and was an annual event until 2010. Content covered all branches of music, although the main focus is on music of the past 40 years. Each round of the quiz was named after a famous song or song lyric.

Music for the Mission featured live performances from a number of local professional performers and guest artists, as well as the use of video, audio and image clues. The 2010 event also featured a live house band, Lincoln le Fevre & The Insiders. There were 8 rounds of 12 questions, for which teams provided written answers like "Dr. Phil" or "walruses". Average prize pool over the past 5 years of the event was A$80,000.

The Masses was a graphically innovative magazine of socialist politics published monthly in the United States from 1911 until 1917, when federal prosecutors brought charges against its editors for conspiring to obstruct conscription. It was succeeded by The Liberator and then later The New Masses. It published reportage, fiction, poetry and art by the leading radicals of the time such as Max Eastman, John Reed, Dorothy Day, and Floyd Dell.

History

Piet Vlag, an eccentric socialist immigrant from the Netherlands, founded the magazine in 1911. Vlag’s dream of a co-operatively operated magazine never worked well, and after just a few issues, he left for Florida. His vision of an illustrated socialist monthly had, however, attracted a circle of young activists in Greenwich Village to The Masses that included visual artists from the Ashcan school like John French Sloan. These Greenwich Village artists and writers asked one of their own, Max Eastman (who was then studying for a doctorate under John Dewey at Columbia University), to edit their magazine. John Sloan, Art Young, Louis Untermeyer, and Inez Haynes Gillmore (among others) mailed a terse letter to Eastman in August 1912: “You are elected editor of The Masses. No pay.” In the first issue, Eastman wrote the following manifesto:

"Music for Love" is an R&B song from Mario's third studio album Go, which was released on December 11, 2007 and is the third official single. Mario announced on 106 & Park that "Music for Love" would be the third official single to be released in April 2008.

It first appeared on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart on the week of April 3 at number 100.

Critical reception

Andy Colleman from allmusic says "bearing a definite resemblance to J. Holiday's gently rocking and swaying "Bed"".

Aaron Fields from KSTW.com says "This is one of the standout beats on this album. Talk about bumpin' this is the one to bump right here. A nice mid-tempo track with much bass. You'll want to put this one on repeat. His voice sounds great on this track and the arrangement is on point once again".

Music video

Mario announced that he would be shooting the video for "Music for Love" and it was rumored that Karina Smirnoff of Dancing with the Stars would appear in the video. However, as of July 2008 there was still no news of a music video for the song. Later it was revealed that there would be no video for "Music For Love" since Mario was working on his fourth album titled D.N.A.
