The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), located in the Houston Museum District, Houston, is one of the largest museums in the United States. The permanent collection of the museum spans more than 6,000 years of history with approximately 64,000 works from six continents.

The museum benefits the Houston community through programs, publications and media presentations. Each year, 1.25 million people benefit from museum's programs, workshops and resource centers. Of that total, more than 500,000 people participate in the community outreach programs.

Facilities

The MFAH's permanent collection totals 63,718 pieces in 270,000 square feet (25,000 m²) of exhibition space, placing it among the larger art museums in the United States. The museum's collections and programs are housed in seven facilities.

The Museum of Fine Arts (or MFA) in Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the largest museums in the United States. It contains more than 450,000 works of art, making it one of the most comprehensive collections in the Americas. With more than one million visitors a year, it is the 55th most-visited art museum in the world as of 2014.

Founded in 1870, the museum moved to its current location in 1909. The museum is affiliated with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and its sister museum, the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts, in Nagoya, Japan.

History

1870–1907

The Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1870 and opened in 1876, with most of its initial collection taken from the Boston Athenæum Art Gallery. Francis Davis Millet, a local artist, was instrumental in starting the Art School affiliated with the museum, and in appointing Emil Otto Grundmann as its first director. The museum was originally located in a highly ornamented brick Gothic Revival building in Copley Square designed by John Hubbard Sturgis and Charles Brigham which was noted for its massed architectural terracotta in an American building. It was built almost entirely of red brick and terracotta with a small amount of stone in its base. The brick was produced by the Peerless Brick Company of Philadelphia and the terracotta was imported from England.

The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, USA, opened to the public in 1965. It was established by Margaret Acheson Stuart (1896–1980).

The museum displays thousands of objects from early antiquity to the present day– one of the most comprehensive art collections on Florida’s west coast. Highlights include masterpieces from Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and others, a sculpture garden, a Steuben glass gallery and one of Florida’s most respected photography collections.

A $21 million expansion broke ground on Monday, December 4, 2006 and more than doubled the size of the museum. The new 33,000 square-foot Hazel Hough wing, on the north side of the building, was finished in 2008. The expansion included a new cafe, an enlarged library and a bigger museum shop.

Houston (ⁱ/ˈhjuːstən/ HYOO-stən) is the most populous city in Texas and the fourth most populous city in the United States. Houston was founded in 1836 on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou (now known as Allen's Landing) and incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837. The city was named after former General Sam Houston, who was president of the Republic of Texas and had commanded and won at the Battle of San Jacinto 25 miles (40 km) east of where the city was established. The burgeoning port and railroad industry, combined with oil discovery in 1901, has induced continual surges in the city's population. In the mid-twentieth century, Houston became the home of the Texas Medical Center—the world's largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions—and NASA's Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located.

History

The present Houston station, which opened on October 26, 1959, was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad to replace Grand Central Station, which was just east of the present station. That station operated from September 1, 1934 until the property was sold to the U.S. Government in 1959 to become the site of the Houston main post office. Grand Central Station had replaced the original Houston & Texas Central depot of 1886. When Amtrak was created it was one of two stations in Houston that served Amtrak trains, the other being Union Station, now part of Minute Maid Park. All Amtrak trains moved to Southern Pacific Station by the end of July 1974, and all trains were canceled or rerouted out of Houston except the Sunset Limited. This station continued to be owned and operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad after the creation of Amtrak, and has been owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad since the merger of Southern Pacific and Union Pacific.

Early days

Summers attended the Academy of Music at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles. He would regularly be invited to participate in activities taking place in the school's music academy. His management team recorded a videotape of Summers's performances, which they hoped would help the singer land a recording contract. He was signed to Capitol Records. Houston's school mates, Robert and Harold, stayed up late after school writing music and rapping. Robert and Harold had already signed a contract with Aftermath but were not as successful as Houston.

Attempted suicide and musical comeback

Before a 2005 London show, Summers suffered an emotional breakdown and reportedly tried to commit suicide by jumping from a window while reportedly under the influence of PCP. When people in his entourage stopped him, he was restrained and locked in a first floor room. While in that room, Summers gouged his left eye out with a plastic fork. After the incident, Summers was arrested by London police and was put in rehab for two weeks. After the rehab, Houston went home to Los Angeles and apologized for the incident. In May 2008 Houston broke his silence over the incident and granted Hoodnews an exclusive interview where he discussed his eye injury and his campaign Stop the Sodomy and Gang Rape in Prison. In the same year two unreleased songs were leaked, entitled 'Faded' and 'So Fine'. In June 2009, Houston did another interview with Hoodnews confirming that he was making a comeback, and looking for new management. Houston is currently working on a feature documentary and a new album.
