Hudson Valley Mall is a shopping mall located in Kingston, New York, in the area known as the Town of Ulster. It is the lone mall in Ulster County and is the only mall located between Poughkeepsie and Albany. Owned and managed by CBL & Associates Properties, the mall opened in 1981 and has an area of 765,000 square feet (71,100 m²) on one level with over 70 shops and restaurants as well as a 12-screen Regal Cinema theater. Adjacent to the mall is Hudson Valley Plaza, a two-tiered complex of "big-box" stores on a west-facing hill, consisting mostly of a Walmart, Petsmart and Toys "R" Us, as well as a few other shops.

In 2015, J. C. Penney announced the closure of its anchor store there. Macy's announced the closure of its anchor store the following year.

The Hudson Valley comprises the valley of the Hudson River and its adjacent communities in the U.S. state of New York, from the cities of Albany and Troy southward to Yonkers in Westchester County. Depending upon the definition delineating its boundaries, the Hudson Valley encompasses a growing metropolis which is home to between 3 and 3.5 million residents centered along the north-south axis of the Hudson River.

Geology and physiography

The Hudson River valley runs more or less north to south down the eastern edge of New York State, cutting through a series of rock types including Triassic sandstones and redbeds in the south and much more ancient Precambrian gneiss in the north (and east). In the Hudson Highlands, the river enters a fjord cut during previous ice ages. To the west lie the extensive Appalachian highlands. In the Tappan Zee region, the west side of the river has high cliffs produced by an erosion-resistant diabase; these cliffs range from 400–800 feet in height.

Hudson Valley is a regional-interest monthly magazine that covers the Hudson Valley. It began publishing in April, 1972, and works out of offices in Poughkeepsie, approximately in the center of its coverage area (Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties).

Valley Mall is a shopping mall in Harrisonburg, Virginia, owned by Macerich and serving the Central Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. It currently features more than 50 stores, with JCPenney, Belk, and Target serving as anchor stores.

History

JCPenney was an original anchor store, along with Watson's (later Peebles), and Leggett (now Belk). A food court, called "Cafe Commons", and a Walmart store were added to the eastern end of the mall in 1991.

In 2003, Walmart's relocation to the new Harrisonburg Crossing shopping center left the Valley Mall with a large amount of vacant space. This space remained vacant through 2003 and 2004. In early 2005, the former Walmart, as well as the food court, were demolished to make way for new retail tenants. Target, Old Navy, and rue21 were constructed on the site in an outdoor format, with the enclosed mall reconfigured to end at the former food court entrance.

A Harrisonburg police officer is assigned to the Valley Mall and another local shopping center. In addition, the mall and some individual stores have their own security personnel.

Valley Mall is a super-regional shopping mall serving Hagerstown, Western Maryland and nearby communities in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Valley Mall is one of two indoor malls in the Hagerstown Metropolitan Area (the other being Martinsburg Mall). The mall competes locally also with Prime Outlets Hagerstown as well as area power centres and lifestyle complexes.

History

Valley Mall, developed by Shopco Development Company of New York City, officially opened its doors on 15 August 1974. It was considered the second mall to open in Western Maryland and the Tri-State Area (the first being its then-sister mall Frederick Towne Mall in Frederick, Maryland which opened in 1972). The mall opened with 90 stores anchored by Montgomery Ward, Eyerly's, JCPenney, McCrory's, People's Drugs, Carmike Cinemas 3, and Pantry Pride grocery store.

Many changes have come to the mall over the years. Within a short time of opening, Eyerly's became The Bon-Ton and a partial second floor with mostly small crafts stores opened. In 1995, the mall underwent a major renovation inside with removal of the second floor. Also in the 1990s, People's Drugs and McCrory's closed and were replaced by small shops. Pantry Pride's location became Martin's, and Martin's moved and was replaced by Toys R Us. In 1999-2000, the mall expanded with a new wing to include Old Navy, a food court, Hecht's department store, a 16 screen multiplex, and additional small stores. In 2003, Sears moved from Long Meadow shopping center in northern Hagerstown to replace Montgomery Ward which closed along with all remaining stores in 2001. In 2006, Hecht's became Macy's as part of the retirement of the Hecht's nameplate. Macy's announced that it would be closing the Valley Mall location in April 2016.
