Hampden was a parliamentary electorate in the Otago region of New Zealand, from 1861 to 1870. The electorate was centred on the town of Hampden.

History

The electorate was formed for the 1860–61 general election. Its first representative was Thomas Fraser, who was vacated for absence in 1862.John Richard Jones succeeded him in an 1862 by-election. He resigned the following year. Jones was succeeded by Frederick Wayne in an 1863 by-election. Wayne retired at the end of the term.

The 1866 general election was won by Charles Edward Haughton. He served until the end of the term in 1870, when the Hampden electorate was abolished. Haughton successfully contested the Wakatipu electorate in the 1871 general election.

Hampden is a neighborhood located in northern Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Roughly triangular in shape, it is bounded to the east by the neighborhood Wyman Park at Keswick Road, to the north by Roland Park at 40th and 41st Street, to the west by the Jones Falls Expressway, and to the south by the neighborhood Remington at Sisson Street. The Homewood campus of the Johns Hopkins University is a short distance to the east.

History

Hampden was originally settled as a residential community for workers at the mills that had sprung up along the Jones Falls; its first residents were in place well before the area was annexed to Baltimore City in 1889. Many of its residents came to the area from the hill country of Kentucky, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania, due to the abundance of jobs the mills provided. This influx cemented the image of the neighborhood for the decades that followed as both primarily white and working-class.
