Hornsey /hɔːrnziː/ is a district of north London, England in the London Borough of Haringey. Hornsey has been a much larger ancient parish than the electoral ward of the same name, in turn a smaller entity than the Municipal Borough of Hornsey which co-governed its area with Middlesex County Council from 1889 to 1965, since which time, the name usually refers only to the London neighbourhood at the heart of these former areas to the west of Hornsey railway station. It is an inner-suburban, for the most part residential, area centred 6.2 miles (10 km) north of Charing Cross.

Locale

The boundaries of Hornsey neighbourhood today are not clearly defined. Since the Municipal Borough of Hornsey was abolished in 1965, the name most commonly may refer either to the N8 postal district which includes Crouch End and part of Harringay, or to a smaller area centred on Hornsey High Street, called Hornsey Village, at the eastern end of which is the churchyard and tower of the former parish church which used to be the administrative centre of the wider parish of Hornsey. This used to stretch to a long border with Islington and Stoke Newington. It also had two small detached parts immediately beyond and within the latter. In the 1840s the parish had 5,937 residents and had been reduced by the loss of Finsbury Park but comprised 2,362 acres (9.56 km²) taking in besides its own village, the established hamlets of Muswell Hill, Crouch End, and part of Highgate.

Hornsey was a parliamentary constituency covering what is now the Hornsey district of north London. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from the 1885 general election until it was abolished for the 1983 general election. It was then largely replaced by the new Hornsey and Wood Green constituency.

History

From 1885 to 1918, the constituency was a county division of Middlesex, and in 1918 it became a parliamentary borough. From 1950 it was a borough constituency.

1885-1918: The parishes of Hornsey (including South Hornsey) and Finchley, and the area included in the Parliamentary Boroughs of the City of London, Finsbury, and Islington.

1918-1974: The Municipal Borough of Hornsey.

1974-1983: The London Borough of Haringey wards of Central Hornsey, Crouch End, Fortis Green, Highgate, Muswell Hill, South Hornsey, Stroud Green, and Turnpike.

Elections in the 1910s

Hornsey was an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex. It was both a civil parish, used for administrative purposes, and an ecclesiastical parish of the Church of England.

Civil parish

Hornsey Parish was probably formed in about the thirteenth century at the time a church was built in the village of Hornsey. The Parish fell within the Ossulstone Hundred of Middlesex, and in later times it was part of the Finsbury division of the Hundred. The Hornsey Parish boundary ran from Stoke Newington, in the south, through Stroud Green to Highgate in the west, and from near Colney Hatch in the north, past Muswell Hill, and a detached portion of Clerkenwell Parish, eastwards to the Tottenham Parish border and then along Green Lanes back to Stoke Newington. In the north a field called Hornsey Detached No.1 stretched up to Colney Hatch and at the southern end there were another two fields, Hornsey Detached Nos. 2 and 3 by Newington Green. The parish also owned another field in Canonbury, Islington, which was surrendered to the Parish by Sir Thomas Draper, Bt., in 1668.
