Freak is the name of three fictional characters in the Marvel Universe. Most villains known as Freak are associated with Iron Man, while the most recent version appears in The Amazing Spider-Man.

Publication history

Happy first appears as the Freak in Tales of Suspense #74–76 (February–April 1966), by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. He appears as the Freak again in later Iron Man issues.

Eddie March first appears as the Freak in Iron Man #67 (April 1974), by Mike Friedrich and George Tuska.

The third Freak first appears in The Amazing Spider-Man #552 and was created by Bob Gale and Phil Jimenez.

Fictional character biography

Happy Hogan

The first Freak is an alter-ego of Happy Hogan, a friend of Iron Man (Tony Stark).

When Happy Hogan becomes desperately ill, doctors try to cure him using a cobalt ray machine powered by Stark's experimental Enervator device. Instead, Happy mutates into a giant, savage, nearly mindless, superhumanly strong humanoid known as Freak. Though he is restored to his normal self, Hogan turns into the Freak several times after being exposed to cobalt on several occasions.

MC2 (Marvel Comics 2) is an imprint from Marvel Comics whose comic books depict an alternative future timeline for the Marvel Universe. The imprint was spun off from the events of What If? #105 (February 1998), which was the first appearance of the character Spider-Girl, Spider-Man's daughter from an alternative future. This reality was designated as Earth-982.

Publication history

The MC2 Universe was conceived by writer/editor Tom DeFalco as a possible alternate future for the Marvel Universe, which is set in the present day, with the first appearances of most Marvel heroes having taken place fifteen years earlier than in main continuity. The goal of the line was to produce comic books that were more accessible to a wider audience than Marvel’s main line of books and weren't entrenched in years of continuity, which was later repeated with the Ultimate Marvel imprint. The MC2 had a distinctly old fashioned feel, with editorial and story choices reflecting late 80s/early 90s presentation and writing styles.

Freak is a television teen drama format created and produced by production company FMX (part of the FremantleMedia group). The series, which was described as an "edgy, teenage coming-of-age story", featured a cast of fresh, young actors and invited the audience to be part of the creative process by choosing the music, becoming a member of the cast and helping to shape the storyline. The first series was sponsored by Red Bull and Procter & Gamble and was launched on July 20, 2009.

The format was created by Josie Ward.

Synopsis

FREAK follows Lucy, an online gaming addict who dresses clothes she steals from her reluctant step-bro Ant (Sean Bourke) until she begins to realise that her gaming obsession has started to turn her into a boy! Lucy's online mates offer advice on how to become the perfect girl and as Lucy starts to discover who she really is, she finds herself getting attention from indie kid Steve (Jamie Di Spirito) and geeky Dennis (Daniel Ormerod), receiving bad advice from Dennis' cruel fashionista sister Heather (Abi Hardingham) and stepping on the toes of Steve‟s girlfriend Kelly (Aisling Jarret). But does she even like the girl they created? Will the real Lucy please stand up?!

Books and comics

Film, stage and television

Freak is a 1998 film directed by Spike Lee. The film is a live performance of John Leguizamo's one man show on Broadway of the same name. Leguizamo's show was semi-autobiographical as he would talk about many aspects of his life. In the performance piece, he also talks about family members such as his parents, grandparents, uncle, and his younger brother. The film premiered on HBO.

The show was a commercial and critical success and garnered Leguizamo and members of the production crew several awards and nominations. The making of this film prompted Lee to cast Leguizamo in the lead role of his next film the following year, Summer of Sam. Leguizamo followed this performance up with the Broadway show Sexaholix: A Love Story in 2001.
