The Digha Nikaya (dīghanikāya; "Collection of Long Discourses") is a Buddhist scripture, the first of the five nikayas, or collections, in the Sutta Pitaka, which is one of the "three baskets" that compose the Pali Tipitaka of ( Theravada )Buddhism. Some of the most commonly referenced suttas from the Digha Nikaya include the Maha-parinibbana Sutta (DN 16), which described the final days and death of the Buddha, the Sigalovada Sutta (DN 31) in which the Buddha discusses ethics and practices for lay followers, and the Samaññaphala (DN 2), Brahmajala Sutta (DN 1) which describes and compares the point of view of Buddha and other ascetics in India about the universe and time (past, present, and future); and Potthapada (DN 9) Suttas, which describe the benefits and practice of samatha meditation.

The Digha Nikaya consists of 34 discourses, broken into three groups:

Digha is a seaside resort city in the state of West Bengal, India. It lies in East Midnapore district and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach with gentle waves extending up to 7 km (4.3 mi) in length. It is the most popular sea resort in the West Bengal.

Geography

It is located at 21°41′N 87°33′E / 21.68°N 87.55°E / 21.68; 87.55. It has an average elevation of 6 metres (20 ft).

It is located 183 km (114 mi) from Kolkata/Howrah via Mecheda and 234 km (145 mi) via Kharagpur, this proximity has probably helped this small hamlet to emerge as a popular weekend getaway with number of good hotels and tourist lodges. Digha is connected to Kolkata/Howrah by a highway and a rail-link via Tamluk.

History

Originally, there was a place called Beerkul, where Digha lies today. This name was referred in Warren Hastings's letters (1780) as Brighton of the East.

An English businessman John Frank Snaith started living here in 1923 and his writings provided a good exposure to this place. He convinced West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop this place to be a beach resort.

Digha (Vidhan Sabha constituency) (Hindi: दीघा विधानसभा निर्वाचन क्षेत्र) is one of 243 legislative assembly constituencies of the legislative assembly of Bihar. It comes under Patna Sahib (Lok Sabha constituency). It came into existence in 2008 after delimitation. Digha assembly constituency has six panchayats and 21 wards of Patna Municipal Corporation. Digha is Bihar's largest assembly constituency having 400 booths with around 4 lakh voters.In Bihar Legislative Assembly election, 2015, Digha was one of the 36 seats to have VVPAT enabled electronic voting machines.
