George Rogers Clark (November 19, 1752 – February 13, 1818) was a surveyor, soldier, and militia officer from Virginia and the highest ranking American military officer on the northwestern frontier during the American Revolutionary War. He served as leader of the Kentucky (then part of Virginia) militia throughout much of the war. Clark is best known for his celebrated captures of Kaskaskia (1778) and Vincennes (1779) during the Illinois Campaign, which greatly weakened British influence in the Northwest Territory. Because the British ceded the entire Northwest Territory to the United States in the 1783 Treaty of Paris, Clark has often been hailed as the "Conqueror of the Old Northwest".

Clark's military achievements all came before his 30th birthday. Afterwards he led militia in the opening engagements of the Northwest Indian War, but was accused of being drunk on duty. Despite his demand for a formal investigation into the accusations, he was disgraced and forced to resign. He left Kentucky to live on the Indiana frontier. Never fully reimbursed by Virginia for his wartime expenditures, Clark spent the final decades of his life evading creditors, and living in increasing poverty and obscurity. He was involved in two failed conspiracies to open the Spanish-controlled Mississippi River to American traffic. After suffering a stroke and the loss of his leg, Clark was aided in his final years by family members, including his younger brother William, one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Clark died of a stroke on February 13, 1818.

George Rogers Clark is a plaster bust made by American artist David McLary. Dated 1985, the sculpture depicts American Revolutionary War hero and frontiersman George Rogers Clark. The bust is located in an alcove on the third floor of the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis, United States. The bust measures 32 inches (81 cm) by 20 inches (51 cm) by 15 inches (38 cm) and sets upon a wooden base measuring approximately 6 inches (15 cm) by 19 inches (48 cm) by 24.25 inches (61.6 cm).

In a frontier-style fringe shirt with lace-up collar, George Rogers Clark looks off to his right. He wears a cowboy hat with the proper left of its brim rolled up. The surface of the bust is rough with a seemingly unrefined style.

On the posterior of the proper right shoulder is the artists' engraving which says:

George Henry Roland Rogers, CBE (9 December 1906 – 19 February 1983) was a British Labour Member of Parliament.

Rogers was educated at Middlesex elementary and grammar schools. He served as a councillor on Wembley Borough Council 1937–41 and worked as a railway clerk, then an industrial consultant with London Transport. He was a member of the TSSA. During World War II, he was a corporal in the Royal Signals.

Rogers was elected as MP for Kensington North in 1945. He was Secretary of the Parliamentary Painting Group 1950–1970 and Parliamentary Private Secretary to George Strauss, Minister of Supply from 1947 to 1949 and to Kenneth Younger, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in 1950. He was a delegate to the United Nations Assembly in 1950, and to the Council of Europe and Western European Union from 1961–63.

He served as an opposition Whip 1954–1964 and as Member of the Commons Chairmen's Panel 1952–54 and 1966. He was a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Government Whip, October 1964 – January 1966. Rogers was appointed a CBE in 1965 and stepped down from parliament in 1970.

Background

Born in Tottenham, Canada West, Rogers was the son of Stephen Rogers, a United Empire Loyalist, and was educated there and at Pickering College. Rogers served on the Carberry school board. In 1884, he married Maggie Bride. He died in 1901.

Clark is the official team mascot of Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs. He was announced on January 13, 2014 as the first official mascot in the modern history of the Cubs franchise. He was introduced that day at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center's pediatric developmental center along with some of the Cubs' top prospects such as number one draft pick Kris Bryant and Albert Almora, Jorge Soler, Mike Olt and Eric Jokisch. Over a dozen Cubs prospects were attending the Cubs' Rookie Development Program that week. The Cubs become the 27th team in Major League Baseball to have a mascot, leaving the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees as the remaining franchises without mascots. According to the Cubs' press release, Clark is a response to fan demands (expressed via surveys and interviews) for more kid-friendly elements at Wrigley Field Cubs games to keep pace with games in other cities that have more to offer youth fans.

Description

He is a "young, friendly Cub" who will wear a backwards baseball cap and greet fans entering Wrigley Field, which is located at the corner of Clark Street (for which he is named) and Addison Street. North Clark Street borders the third base side of Wrigley Field. According to the Cubs, the fictional character Clark is descended from Joa, the franchise's original live Bears mascot in 1916.
