George Lopez is an American television sitcom created by comedian George Lopez, Bruce Helford and Robert Borden, which originally aired on ABC from March 27, 2002, to May 8, 2007. The show lasted six seasons, with a combined total of 120 episodes, and is currently in syndication. George Lopez stars the titular comedian George Lopez, who plays a fictionalized version of himself, and revolves around his life at work and raising his family at home. The series was produced by Fortis Films and Mohawk Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The main executive producers consisted of George Lopez, Bruce Helford, Deborah Oppenheimer and Sandra Bullock.

Premise

The comedy revolves around a fictionalized portrayal of George Lopez, working at the Power Bros. aviation factory and raising his family consisting of his wife Angie, his daughter Carmen, and his son, Max, after having endured a dysfunctional and unhappy childhood at the hands of his alcoholic, remorseless mother Benny, who is portrayed as careless and unloving. Other characters include Angie's indulgent father Vic Palmero, a wealthy doctor, and George's closest childhood friend Ernie Cardenas, noted for his fecklessness at dating and his socially awkward behavior. After Carmen's departure from the series, the role fulfilled by her character was replaced with Angie's overindulged niece Veronica, with a large trust fund that has been entrusted under George's care.

George Lopez (born April 23, 1961) is an American comedian, actor, and talk show host. He is mostly known for starring in his self-produced ABC sitcom George Lopez. His stand-up comedy examines race and ethnic relations, including Mexican American culture. Lopez has received several honors for his work and contributions to the Latino community, including the 2003 Imagen Vision Award, the 2003 Latino Spirit Award for Excellence in Television and the National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Award. He was also named one of "The Top 25 Hispanics in America" by Time magazine in 2005.

Early life

Lopez was born on April 23, 1961, in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California, the son of Frieda and Anatasio Lopez, a migrant worker. He is of Mexican descent. He was deserted by his father when he was two months old and by his mother when he was 10 years old, but was raised by his maternal grandmother, Benita Gutierrez, a factory worker, and step-grandfather, Refugio Gutierrez, a construction worker. Lopez attended San Fernando High School, graduating in 1979.

George Lopez

George Edward Lopez (played by George Lopez) is the main protagonist of the series. He is the son of Manny and Benny Lopez. George married Angie Palmero right out of High School and had two children, Carmen and Max. George is Mexican descent and proudly boasts about it several times throughout the series, though he occasionally makes jokes about it as well. In the pilot episode, "Prototype," George gets promoted to manager of Powers Brothers Aviation (usually seen as Powers Bros.), an airplane parts factory. He is also dyslexic, which often comes into play on the show. His son, Max, also has dyslexia, but a more severe case than his father. George also loves to play golf and he usually does it whenever he gets out of situations and to outsmart his family, like listening to Carmen's poetry or talk about Max's dyslexic problems.
