Gangs of Wasseypur (stylised as Gangs of वासेपुर) is a 2012 Indian two-part crime film co-written, produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. Centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad, and the underlying power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families, the Part 1 features ensemble cast with Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda, Tigmanshu Dhulia in the major roles and its story spans from the early 1940s to mid-1990s. Both parts were originally shot as a single film measuring a total of 319 minutes and screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors' Fortnight but since no Indian theatre would volunteer to screen a five plus hour film, it was divided into two parts for the Indian market.

Gangs of Wasseypur is the soundtrack album, composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, to the 2012 Hindi film Gangs of Wasseypur, directed by Anurag Kashyap, featuring an ensemble cast led by Manoj Bajpai. The film is jointly produced by Viacom 18 and Anurag Kashyap Films Private Limited (AKFPL). The film which is in two parts,has a whopping 25 songs. The album of first part features 14 tracks, and was released on 23 May 2012 by T-Series.Varun Grover has written the lyrics and Piyush Mishra has also written three songs in the film - Keh Ke Loonga, Ik Bagal and Manmauji. The first song has become such a hit that even Mishra is surprised with it.

Sneha Khanwalkar had been nominated for various awards for the music of the 2 parts, including the prestigious Best Music Director award at the 58th Filmfare Awards.

Wasseypur is a small town in the state of Jharkhand in India. Wasseypur was once in Bengal, then in Bihar and is now in Jharkhand.

Wasseypur is about 165 km from state capital Ranchi. Naya Bazaar, Wasseypur is an area with a total population of around 200,000, divided in five municipal wards. Most of the people in this area work in administrative capacities.

History

The names of rival dons Sabir Alam and Fahim Khan, lords of two mafia families are associated with Wasseypur. Though out on bail after spending eight years in jail, Sabir Alam rarely stays at home due to the threat to his life. Fahim Khan, who is still alive and in the Hazaribagh jail currently,is son of Shafiq Khan,who had a rivalry with Surya Dev Singh. The foundation of Wasseypur was laid by the two brothers - late M A Wassey Sahab and M A Jabbar Sahab in 1955-56.
