Brian T. Roper (19 August 1929 – 14 May 1994) was a British-American film and television actor, and, in later years, real estate agent.

Biography

Roper played youthful parts during his career due to his young physique, which included his appearance as the animal-loving young boy "Dickon" with a pet fox in The Secret Garden (1949), starring Margaret O'Brien. The Secret Garden was prepared for MGM’s 25th anniversary as a film studio and was heavily promoted in 1949–50. Newspapers at the time claimed his age as 14. He appeared this age but was actually five years older. Roper was noted for his reddish hair and some freckles.

Born in Doncaster, Roper left England on 5 October 1948 when he was 19 years old after his selection for The Secret Garden from more than 100 boys who were tested during a six-month search. Work on the film began on 4 October 1948 and was completed in late November. He later lived in both Britain and California, depending on the location of his acting work, and acted for 24 years.

Career

Roper was born and raised in southeast London, and studied economics at the University of Wales. After a stint at Unilever he studied for a master's degree at the University of Manchester.

In 1980s Roper held a number of administrative posts at the Newcastle Polytechnic, including the Head of the School of Economics, the Head of the Faculty of Professional Studies and Assistant Director. Roper then moved to Oxford Polytechnic (renamed in 1992 into Oxford Brookes University) to take up the Deputy Director post there. He later served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Oxford Brookes.

In early 1994 Roper moved to the University of North London to become Vice-Chancellor there. He remained at that post until the 2002 merger of North London with London Guildhall University, which produced the London Metropolitan University.

Brian Roper is an American Gaelic footballer who has lived in Ireland most of his life,with Aodh Ruadh and a former member of the Donegal senior inter-county team. Brian prefers to play centre-forward, but has tended to play at wing-forward for Donegal. Brian McEniff has described him as one of the best forwards in the country for the best part of a decade and a half.

Playing career

Roper's honours include an Ulster Under-21 Football Championship medal with Donegal and three Donegal Senior Football Championships and one League with Aodh Ruadh. His other interests include Manchester United Football Club and scuba diving.

Roper's Championship debut came in 1996 against Antrim in Ballybofey, having made several appearances in the National Football League earlier that year. P.J. McGowan, gave him his big break after drafting him into the squad along with Damien Diver, Adrian Sweeney, Peter McGinley, Dessie McNamara and Martin Coll, following Donegal's 1995 Ulster Under-21 Football Championship winning campaign.
