Birmingham is a city in Van Buren County, Iowa, United States. The population was 448 at the 2010 census.

History

Birmingham was laid out in 1839. The town was incorporated on May 20, 1856.

Geography

Birmingham is located at 40°52'43" North, 91°56'48" West (40.878626, -91.946610).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.06 square miles (2.75 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 448 people, 191 households, and 120 families residing in the city. The population density was 422.6 inhabitants per square mile (163.2/km²). There were 213 housing units at an average density of 200.9 per square mile (77.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.8% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.0% of the population.

There were 191 households of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.2% were non-families. 29.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.86.

Birmingham (foaled 1827) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1830. A cheaply bought foal, who almost died before he ever appeared on a racecourse, Birmingham developed into a "celebrated racer" finishing first in twenty-four races from thirty-nine starts between July 1829 and June 1833.

At a time when British horse racing was centred on a small number of major racecourses, Birmingham was campaigned at relatively minor courses in the English Midlands before defeating the Epsom Derby winner Priam to record a 15/1 upset in the St Leger. Birmingham remained in training for a further three seasons after his classic success, winning four times in 1831, six times in 1832, and once in 1833. At the end of his racing career, Birmingham was sold and exported to Russia, where he had limited success as a sire of winners.

Background

Birmingham was a large, powerful brown horse standing between 16.2 and 17.0 hands, bred by Mr Lacy. As a foal, he was sold for 45 guineas to William Beardsworth, who built up a reputation in the early 1830s for winning important races with cheaply bought horses. The horse was named after Beardsworth's home town of Birmingham.

Birmingham Motors was a United States based automobile company. Organized in 1920, it was tentatively in business only from 1921 through 1923.

The Birmingham offered a number of unusual features, including a type of swing axle suspension and exterior finishes of DuPont Fabrikoid instead of paint.

Failure to generate capital for factory investment hobbled Birmingham. A political scandal involving the mayor of Jamestown, New York who was the company's titular President resulted in Birmingham Motors going out of business. Only about 50 Birmingham autos were built; none are known to have survived to the 21st century.

Plot

After his father dies, Esper Harte learns that he may collect on his father's insurance. However, his mother and a crooked cop want to get rid of him so that they can take the money. Desperate to escape their problems, Esper and his girlfriend, Donna Huffman, decide to cook their own methamphetamine.

Reception

The film received negative reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reports 15% of surveyed critics liked it, with a 3.9/10 rating average out of 13 reviews.Metacritic gave it a score of 35/100, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".

Slant Magazine called the film "stupendously slipshod" and "meandering, amateurish sleaze", while The New York Times criticized the lack of subtlety. In a more positive review, The Village Voice praised the film's energy and acting.Monsters and Critics said "This story and the characters in it are as real as the day is long and faithful to all that is good and bad about growing up with ever shrinking horizons."

Iowa Highway 102 (Iowa 102) is a very short state highway entirely within the city of New Sharon, Iowa. The entire 0.5-mile (0.80 km) route is along Market Street in New Sharon. The route begins at New Sharon's western city limit where it continues as Mahaska County Road G5T and ends at the corner of Market and Main Streets in New Sharon, where U.S. Route 63 and Iowa Highway 146 intersect.

Iowa 102 began at exit 44, a diamond interchange along Iowa 163 at Pella. It headed north along Adams Street until it reached Vermeer Road. It turned to the east and headed to the northeast in a stair-step path for 3 ³⁄₄ miles (6.0 km). It continued in a stair-step path as it ran east for four miles then turned to the north for one mile (1.6 km). It headed east for two miles (3.2 km), jogged north for ¹⁄₂ mile (0.80 km), and then east again for 1 ¹⁄₂ miles (2.4 km). Now at the western city limits of New Sharon, the current extent of Iowa 102 begins. Along Market Street, Iowa 102 travels ¹⁄₂ mile (0.80 km) to Main Street. At the corner of Main and Market Streets, Iowa 102 comes from the west and ends, US 63 approaches from the south on Main Street and leaves east on Market, and Iowa 146 begins and heads to the north.
