Antioch University is a private university in the United States with five campuses located in four states. Campuses are located in Los Angeles, California; Santa Barbara, California; Keene, New Hampshire; Yellow Springs, Ohio; and Seattle, Washington. Additionally, Antioch University houses two institution-wide programs, the Ph.D. in Leadership and Change and Antioch Education Abroad. Antioch University should not be confused with Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, which since 2009 has had no affiliation with the University.

Overview

Antioch University serves more than 4,000 adult students around the world and across the country, online and from its five campuses in four states. The Los Angeles campus offers an MFA in creative writing; the Santa Barbara campus offers an MA in education with an emphasis in social justice; the Midwest campus offers a program in conflict analysis; the Seattle campus offers integrative drama and art therapy programs; and the online campus offers a BA in Human Services Administration as well as a BA in Liberal Studies with various concentrations.

Antioch University West - San Francisco (AUW) was located in San Francisco, California. It was one of many campuses formed by Antioch University, a national university, which had its genesis with Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1852. The San Francisco campus closed in July, 1989. The current campuses include Antioch University New England (Keene NH), Antioch University Midwest, (Yellow Springs, OH), Antioch University Los Angeles, Antioch University Santa Barbara and Antioch University Seattle. Antioch College was closed financial reasons effective June 30, 2008. On September 4, 2009, the college's assets were transferred to an independent corporation known as Antioch College Continuation Corporation (ACCC). ACCC reopened the College as an independent institution in the fall of 2011. It operates under the name "Antioch College" by virtue of a license from Antioch University.

Programs

AUW programs included a "design your degree" undergraduate program (department head: Tom Parsons) that was noted for giving academic credit for evaluated life experience. Graduate programs such as Health Services Administration, Clinical Psychology (department head - Noele Krenkel), Holistic Psychology (department head: noted author and Esalen-associated psychologist, Dr. Will Shutz), Somatic Psychology (department heads: Don Johnson and Michael Khan), Feminist Studies (department heads: Lauree Moss and Ani Mander), Community Planning (Department Head: David Keilch) among other diverse programs.

Antioch on the Orontes (/ˈæntiˌɒk/; also Syrian Antioch) was an ancient Greek - Roman city on the eastern side of the Orontes River. Its ruins lie near the modern city of Antakya, Turkey, and lends the modern city its name.

Antioch was founded near the end of the 4th century BC by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's generals. The city's geographical, military, and economic location benefited its occupants, particularly such features as the spice trade, the Silk Road, and the Persian Royal Road. It eventually rivaled Alexandria as the chief city of the Near East. It was also the main center of Hellenistic Judaism at the end of the Second Temple period. Most of the urban development of Antioch was done during the Roman empire, when the city was one of the most important in the eastern Mediterranean area of Rome's dominions.

Antioch was called "the cradle of Christianity" as a result of its longevity and the pivotal role that it played in the emergence of both Hellenistic Judaism and Early Christianity. The Christian New Testament asserts that the name Christian first emerged in Antioch. It was one of the four cities of the Syrian tetrapolis, and its residents were known as Antiochenes. The city was once a great metropolis of half a million people during Augustan times, but it declined to insignificance during the Middle Ages because of warfare, repeated earthquakes, and a change in trade routes, which no longer passed through Antioch from the far east, following the Mongol conquests.

Antioch is a station on Metra's North Central Service in Antioch, Illinois. The station is 55.7 miles (89.6 km) away from Union Station, the southern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Antioch is in zone K.

Antioch is the northern terminus of the North Central Service.
