"Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy)" is a 1924 song by Cádiz-born composer José María Lacalle García (later Joseph Lacalle), with Spanish lyrics. After the composer died in 1937, English language lyrics were written by Albert Gamse.

Overview

Miguel Fleta sang "Amapola (Pretty Little Poppy)" in the 1925 film "The Lecuona Cuban Boys"; Deanna Durbin in the 1939 film "First Love"; and Alberto Rabagliati in a 1941 film. Japanese singer Noriko Awaya released her version of the song in 1937. A popular recorded version was made later by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with vocalists Helen O'Connell and Bob Eberly; this was released by Decca Records as catalog number 3629 and arrived on the Billboard charts on March 14, 1941, where it stayed for 14 weeks and reached #1. Another version, with vocals in English, was recorded by Spike Jones and his City Slickers in the unforgettable comic style of his band; the flip-side was Jones Polka, a drinking-song, sung in a strong European accent. Since its debut "Amapola" has been a favorite recording of opera tenors: Tito Schipa (1926), Alfredo Kraus (1959, Luigi Alva (1963), and, most notably, the 1950 recording by Jan Peerce. An orchestral version of "Amapola" directed by Ennio Morricone served as a leitmotif in the 1984 gangster film Once Upon a Time in America. In 1990 Amapola was sung during the first Three Tenors concert in Rome. Ryuichi Kawamura's cover appears on his 2011 album The Voice.

Guadalupe Ramona Olvera is a Mexican professional wrestler, or Luchadora as they are called in Spanish, best known under the ring name La Amapola (Spanish for "The Poppy"). Olvera is best known for her work in the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), which she has worked for all her career. She has also made appearances for various other Mexican promotions including International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG) where she held or holds the IWRG Intercontinental Women's Championship. At 1,442 days, she is the longest reigning CMLL World Women's Champion.

Maria Amapola Cabase, better known by her stage name Amapola, is a Filipino singer, actress, musician, television and radio host. She is widely known in the Philippines as the original artist for the song, "Kapantay Ay Langit", which was later popularized by singer Pilita Corrales. Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos dubbed Cabase as a "Music Ambassador" for the country in 1973 in celebration of Amapola's first concert in New York, November 3, 1973, at New York's Town Hall. In 1984, she released her international debut album produced in collaboration with jazz pianist Bobby Enriquez, who led the Cal Tjader Trio for Amapola's debut jazz album, Sophisticated Lady.

Music career

Amapola's music career began when she sang the love theme "Guihigugma Ko Ikaw" for the Azucena Pictures film Utlanan. The song "Kapantay Ay Langit" on YouTube sung by Amapola and composed by George Canseco, won the Manila Film Festival "Gabi Ng Parangal" (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Award) song of the year award. It was later popularized by singer Pilita Corrales which eventually became her signature song. Amapola was awarded the key to Cebu City by then Governor Manuel Cuenco to celebrate her work as Toy Orchestra Conductor, making her the youngest person ever to receive the honor. The event was held at Cebu City's DYRC-Radio, attended by Cebu Normal School (now Cebu Normal University) Military Toy Orchestra, conductor Amapola and director Coronada Pingol, the CNS Toy Orchestra creator.

Song, LLC was a low-cost air service within an airline brand owned and operated by Delta Air Lines from 2003 to 2006.

Song's main focus was on leisure traffic between the northeastern United States and Florida, a market where it competed with JetBlue Airways. It also operated flights between Florida and the West Coast, and from the Northeast to the west coast.

Song's aircraft were fitted with leather seats and free personal entertainment systems at every seat, with audio MP3 programmable selections, trivia games that could be played against other passengers, a flight tracker, and satellite television (provided by the DISH Network). Song offered free beverages, but charged for meals and liquor. Both brand-name snack boxes and healthy organic meals were offered. The flight safety instructions were sung or otherwise artistically interpreted, depending on the cabin crew.
