América is a Brazilian telenovela that was originally broadcast in 2005 by Rede Globo. The telenovela focused on the life of an illegal immigrant to the United States and the lives of those she left behind in Brazil. It stars Deborah Secco and Murilo Benício. It was written by Glória Perez and directed by Jayme Monjardim and Marcos Schechtman.

In 2009, Telemundo began airing a Spanish-dubbed version of this series and ran for approximately one year. . The network aired the series from Monday to Friday in the daytime. Unlike most of its soap operas, the network didn't broadcast English subtitles as closed captions on CC3.

Main plot

Sol and Tião are born to different social backgrounds --- she to a poor suburban family in Rio, and him to an even poorer family who raised cattle in West São Paulo State. They eventually meet, due to unlikely circumstances, but part again, as she has set as her ultimate priority to reach the United States or bust. While she comes to the U.S. to live as an illegal immigrant, he remains in Brazil and, despite many trials and tribulations, he becomes a successful rodeo cowboy.

Francisco Javier Pozas (born February 3, 1964) is a Mexican professional wrestler, or luchador, who is best known under the ring name El Pantera, but has also worked as Pantera II, El Manaya, América, Tritón and TANAKA over the years. Pozas made his wrestling debut in 1985, working as an enmascarado (masked wrestler) with a panther-inspired mask to go with his ring character of "El Pantera". Over the years Pozas has worked in Mexico, Japan and the United States; In Mexico he has worked for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG), in Japan he's worked for Universal Lucha Libre (ULL) and All-Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) and in the United States he's most known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) from 1997 to 1999 and Chikara where he has worked shows since 2007. In 2006 Pantera lost his mask as a result of a match. He, however, continued wearing the mask when working for Chikara and in 2011 also began wearing it again in Mexico.

América Futebol Clube – also referred to as América (AM) or América de Manaus – is an association football club from Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas.

History

The club was founded as América Futebol Clube on August 2, 1939 by the brothers Arthur and Amadeu Teixeira Alves, and named after the Rio de Janeiro club of the same name. In the beginning, the club's only players were Dom Bosco School students.

América won four state championships in a row from 1951 to 1954.

América competed in 1981 in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C, which was named Taça de Bronze (Bronze Trophy) at the time. The club was eliminated in the first stage, by Izabelense of Pará state.

On May 14, 2010, the club name was changed to Manaos Futebol Clube, in order to popularize it amongst the people of Amazonas. The colors were changed from red and white to green (representing the Amazon Forest), and black (representing the Rio Negro (Black River)). However, on June 21, 2010, the board of directors, motivated by the lack of financial investments expected with the identity change, reverted to the club's original name, América.
