Carrietta N. "Carrie" White is the title character and protagonist of Stephen King's novel Carrie.

In every adaptation and portrayal of Carrie, she is portrayed as a high school outcast, loathed, taunted and bullied by her classmates and her mother Margaret White, an abusive, mentally ill and unstable religious fanatic. At the age of seventeen, she has her first menstrual period in the showers at school, awakening her dormant telekinetic and telepathic abilities. After being humiliated in front of the entire school during the prom, in a cruel prank involving pig's blood, Carrie uses her wild talents in a fit of blind rage to ruthlessly massacre her classmates and the entire town of Chamberlain, Maine.

Novel

Carrie White was born on September 21, 1963. She is blonde-haired with brown eyes, full-figured, has acne, and is considered unattractive, though she is described as having been very pretty as a little girl. Her clothing is old and puritanical, because her mother will not allow her to buy clothes similar to other girls her age, believing them to be too provocative. Carrie is shy, lonely and isolated; the closest thing she has to a friend at school is fellow student Sue Snell, who pities more than likes her. Margaret White, her mother, throws her into a "prayer closet" whenever she misbehaves. Carrie does, however, show signs of rebelling against her mother's religious fanaticism. But by high school Carrie has begun reading teen magazines in the school library and sneaking lipstick in her purse. Later in the novel, she undergoes a profound transformation, both physically and psychologically.

She is known as the "First Lady of Hairdressing," who has styled Jennifer Jones, Betsy Bloomingdale, Elizabeth Taylor, Goldie Hawn, Camille Cosby, Ann-Margret, Elvis Presley, Sharon Tate, Brad Pitt, and Sandra Bullock, among others. She collaborated with Richard Avedon on shoots for Vogue, and her work has appeared in Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Allure, Vanity Fair, Ladies' Home Journal, Mademoiselle, and Glamour. She is credited as technical advisor on Shampoo and, in 2011, she published her internationally bestselling autobiography, Upper Cut: Highlights of My Hollywood Life.

Early life

Carrie White was born as Carole Enwright, on Burton Way in Beverly Hills, and was uprooted to Pacoima, CA when she was seven, before moving back to Hollywood, CA at the age of fifteen. At Hollywood High, she studied art with June Hardwood and drama with John Engle and Martin Landau. After graduating high school, she supported herself while pursuing cosmetology degree by working at Bob's Big Boy and modeling hats downtown in the garment district to trying out for Playboy; she was selected by Playboy as Playmate of the Month in July 1963.
