- Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
The Wikipedia Education Program is one of the most quickly-developing programs in our communities. It has one main mission: to teach students how to edit Wikipedia and help them do so as part of their education.
Most commonly, students write Wikipedia articles instead of writing traditional term papers, on course-related topics for academic credit. Students also contribute to Wikimedia projects for community service, as part of a club or a camp, or at edit-a-thons, hackathons and workshops. And teachers may learn Wikipedia editing as part of their teacher training.
More than 60 initiatives are underway worldwide. And over the past four years, more than 10,000 students, many of whom were women, have participated in the program, adding 12 million words, the equivalent of 45,000 printed pages, to more than 10,000 Wikipedia articles in numerous languages.
Engaging students to contribute to Wikipedia not only helps improve the encyclopedia in the first place, but also educates more people about it and increases respect for it. The Wikipedia Education Program grows support for free knowledge and all of the Wikimedia projects.
In this session, a panel of experienced education program leaders from around the world will discuss how Wikimedia can be used in Education and how students can be valuable members of our communities. Also, Anna will share the new Education Program Toolkit and Vassia will share her Wiki Educator's Survival Kit.
This session will help Wikimedians, educators, those who are already running Wikipedia Education Programs, and those who are already using the Wikimedia projects in educational settings, as well as those who are curious about it. This session will present successful models, pitfalls, and protocols that will help everyone make the most of their education program.
The panel will include the following people:
- Anna Koval (WMF) (Moderator)
- Vassia Atanassova (Bulgaria) (Lead Presenter)
- Melina Masnatta (Argentina) (Panelist)
- Susanna Mkrtchyan (Armenia) (Panelist)

- Length of session (if other than 30 minutes, specify how long)
30 or 60 or 90 minutes, please. The education program panel at the 2014 CEE Meeting was 90 minutes long, and we needed extra time because there were so many questions from attendees.
- Will you attend Wikimania if your submission is not accepted?
Anna: Yes, most likely. Vassia: Yes, if awarded a scholarship.
