Kenneth Branagh's latest Shakespearean film, As You Like It (2006), has not so far encountere... more Kenneth Branagh's latest Shakespearean film, As You Like It (2006), has not so far encountered much critical interest. Even the 'Community' site of HBO Films is poor of comments (there are actually only two: one extolling the director for putting «his whole soul into his movies», the other lamenting the unavoidable cuts to the play text, up to the basic question «where is the rest of Rosalind?». A third and more critical comment showing some of the inconsistencies of the movie can be read via a link. The critics' silence may be attributable on the one side to the film's process of physical and cultural dépaysement (with the action taking place in late nineteenth-century Japan), and on the other to Branagh's tendency to choose a 'worldwide Shakespeare' stance (in the casting, for example, where Orlando and Oliver are two black actors). The chapter presents the multimodal analysis of three handbills printed for irregular medical pra... more The chapter presents the multimodal analysis of three handbills printed for irregular medical practitioners (especially surgeons) in the second half of the seventeenth century. These cultural artefacts, besides describing irregulars’ usually multiple medicaments, include conspicuous images and/or particular fonts used to catch the reader’s eye and improve sales, thus showing their authors’ sophisticated care for typography. The chapter considers how such details interacted with the language of advertising in the early stages of mass communication and marketing procedures. It is this interaction between linguistic and visual features that can lead to such a reversal of status between text and images that words may be interpreted as paratextual additions to visual texts. In conclusion, a source of one of the images is pinpointed so as to show how irregulars popularised scientific publications.

The article presents some case studies of early sixteenth-century English (and Scottish) drama in... more The article presents some case studies of early sixteenth-century English (and Scottish) drama in search of transformation from the overall religious condemnation of sins to a worldlier idea of crime and punishment. Starting from the sin of avarice and connecting it to the acquisition of illegal wealth and stolen property both on an individual and a political level, it also includes usury among property crimes. Relevant Tudor laws and statutes are taken into account and plays are studied on the background of contemporary legislation. The representation of onstage trial courts is also investigated, showing the change and continuation of legal procedures. Onstage forms of punishment are discussed as well. The analysis shows that the passage from sin to crime and from religious condemnation to earthly punishment, a phenomenon still difficult to perceive for law and social historians, is nevertheless foreshadowed in early Tudor drama, which progressively reflects social and political is...

The New Globe 2015 performance of The Merchant of Venice made a very dark comedy of a so called ‘... more The New Globe 2015 performance of The Merchant of Venice made a very dark comedy of a so called ‘romantic’ one. Not only is Shylock shown as a victim of Venetian anti-Semitism from the very beginning, but he also turns out as a pitiful – and deeply pitied – character because of the addition to the end of the play created by the director Jonathan Munby. The article, after summarising the role of the initial and final phases of dramatic texts, discusses the beginning and ending added by Munby, also through some reviewers’ responses to the production both in London and in the USA. It then articulates its own standpoint claiming that the additions made by the director to the original text, while legitimate as artistic objects and directorial choices, diminish the play’s complexity and constitute sort of performative paratext to the play. (The research is based on the “Globe on Screen” DVD version of the play).

Mayster Brendiche of Braban in the anonymous Play of the Sacrament and the Poticary in John Heywo... more Mayster Brendiche of Braban in the anonymous Play of the Sacrament and the Poticary in John Heywood’s The Foure PP are the first medical practitioners in English drama. The article studies both characters in the light of early modern medical science in order to stress the relationship between medicine on stage and the state of scientific knowledge in English coeval society. After discussing issues raised by recent criticism, especially about The Play of the Sacrament as being transcribed in the early Reformation, the article examines the two characters according to contemporary medical literature which enlists the characteristics of the good physician and of the seemly apothecary. It results that in the two plays neither character complies with the conduct lines of their respective professions, since the plays present them as negative and despicable quacks, in spite – or rather just because – of their verbose behaviour.
