Limited attention has been paid to the influence that social network dimensions associated to sen... more Limited attention has been paid to the influence that social network dimensions associated to sender’s position relative to the receiver may have on an individual’s choices of contents. Thus, it is relevant to know how network dimensions (i.e., network centrality, structural holes, and tie strength) may influence the content selection by receivers. This raises the question of what determines such content selection. These relationships are empirically tested by using both social network data and participants’ survey data. Findings show that despite the fact that degree and strength of tie are associated with central positions in the network, they are not related to individuals’ choices of contents. Findings also suggest that structural holes in association with the emotion of surprise, used as a proxy for the perception of novelty, offer a good representation of people’s behavior when they select contents. These are valuable arguments to enhance content personalization with new perspectives for receivers.

accessibility of he... more Abstract: The development of new applications for mobile devices expands the
accessibility of health information promoting literacy, especially among young people.
Obesity is a major epidemic problem, mostly preventable with adequate food choices
and physical activity. Considering that youngsters have a great enthusiasm for new
technologies and for recreational activities we are developing an interactive game
designed to mobile platforms to improve nutrition literacy. The game prototype has been
tested and its design is being improved. To evaluate the game efficacy students will be
divided in three groups: one using the game, other attending nutritional activities, and
the third without any intervention. Nutritional literacy enhancement and possible
nutritional behavior changes will be addressed using a questionnaire filled before and
after the interventions. We expect that this strategy may contribute to the youngsters’
nutritional improvement and thus to obesity prevention.

Although scientific controversies are resolved when the evidence favours one of the arguments, in... more Although scientific controversies are resolved when the evidence favours one of the arguments, in fact many of these controversies that were resolved in the scientific field continue to circulate as real controversies in the social sphere and even in political debates. That is the case of the reality of climate change and the unproven connection between vaccines and autism. Such disputes are not purely ‘scientific’, they are formed around and structured by complex social interest. In addition, against the rigour of scientific research, now the Internet allows a wide diffusion of unconfirmed information. In this chapter, we will examine the controversy surrounding online videos. Almost 24% present controversies, mainly on vaccines, followed by climate change. However, nanotechnology has not come to the public agenda as a controversial issue. When scientific issues are presented as controversial, in most cases they do so from a political or social rather than from a scientific frame. User-generated content is most likely to introduce controversy. Future works might consider the relationship between the presence of science on the public agenda and the levels of controversy in online video.

A experiência de sensações tais como a de aceleração do tempo ou de eliminação do espaço vulgariz... more A experiência de sensações tais como a de aceleração do tempo ou de eliminação do espaço vulgarizou-se na vida moderna cada vez mais organizada segundo o ritmo do “tempo real”, instituído pelos média digitais. Neste artigo, partindo do conceito de compressão espaço-tempo de Harvey (1999), confrontamos perspetivas situadas nas correntes do determinismo tecnológico com outras que defendem a relação dialógica entre tecnologia e sociedade. Abordam-se noções como as de desterritorialização e destemporalização que permitem compreender o surgimento de um espaço de dados fragmentado e intemporal, correspondendo a uma “nova geografia”, na qual já não é possível estabelecer uma fronteira clara entre o mundo físico e o digital. O poder integrador que o conceito de literacia digital pode assumir e sugerir leva a que neste texto seja dado especial enfoque à sua análise, abordando-se a sua evolução e as principais perspetivas sobre o seu significado. Pelo facto de a noção de competência digital estar fortemente relacionada com a de literacia digital, esse conceito é também abordado. O artigo conclui com a apresentação de um conjunto de iniciativas existentes para o desenvolvimento de novas formas de literacias relacionadas com o ambiente digital que carateriza a Sociedade da Informação atual, reforçando a pertinência destes temas no contexto atual.
