The village is dismantled between IX and X century and sealed by alluvial levels and the subsequent cultivation of the area.

This study concerns the metal finds from the mining castle of Cugnano which were found during the... more This study concerns the metal finds from the mining castle of Cugnano which were found during the first ten excavation campaigns
(2002-2012). The main objective is to publish for the first time the entire set of metal objects from a mining site, which is part of a re- search project that has been conducted now for over 30 years by the Department of Medieval Archaeology of the University of Siena in the Colline Metallifere of the Grosseto area. A total of 1381 pieces of metal artifacts were found, 635 of which were whole and 746 of which were fragments. This number represents only the result of the first ten years of excavations and is consequently only a part of the actual set of metal finds from the castle. Moreover, the purpose of this paper is also to provide some general guidelines for the methodology used for the study of this class of objects and thus provide a point of reference for the study of metal artifacts.

By Entering the data taken from the Napoleonic cadastre registry into the GIS (Geographical Infor... more By Entering the data taken from the Napoleonic cadastre registry into the GIS (Geographical Informa- tion System), it was possible to reconstruct the landscape structure of Maderno in 1809. This allowed us to identify macro areas related to the land use like woods, pastures, farming fields and fruit gardens. The progressive change was then observed using different instruments: land use was investigated for the years 1954, 1980 and 2007, and related with aerial photography. Another analysis carried out through the land registry was the properties situation: this analysis made it possible to distinguish mu- nicipal properties from those pertinent to ecclesiastical institutions and those owned by private families. Focusing on the latter, we discuss the composition and distribution of the wealthiest families. Finally, starting from the vectorization of the Napoleonic mapping, it was possible to identify the Units of Agri- cultural Landscape referable to the inhabitants of Monte Maderno, on the basis of the orientation of the particles compared to the districts.

This work aimed to develop a non-invasive and non-contact approach for studying a stamped Dressel... more This work aimed to develop a non-invasive and non-contact approach for studying a stamped Dressel 6B amphora from a urban excavation in Padova (Italy). We created a 3D model of the amphora using two methods of acquisition, laser scanning and photography, and processed with an opensource 3D modeling software (MeshLab) and an image-based 3D modeling software (Agisoft Photoscan). Then we focused on the stamp on the rim of the amphora, taking a number of vertical photos to be processed with the opensource software RTIBuilder. We got a PTM file viewed with the RTIViewer, which permits to observe the images using various rendering modes.
The realistic and measured 3D model of the amphora let archaeologists to analyze diagnostical parts, i.e. handles, neck, rim, the position and dimension of the stamp, in typological and technological researches. Moreover, the RTI image permits us to get a clear image of the shape and the letters of the stamp, useful for who is carrying studies on stamps and amphora workshops, without handling the object.
Further applications for both 3D models of amphoras and RTI images of stamps might be the creation of open online databases of amphoras and stamps from the Mediterranean; measured and scaled reproductions of amphoras using 3D printers, to be used for educational purposes in museums or schools.
