Our study therefore proposes to understand how pre-service teachers in Kazakhstan and Switzerland perceived it. Our data, collected through an online survey and analysed in different ways (descriptive statistics, lexicometric analysis, content analysis) according to the types of questions, highlight the tensions related to the universalist aim of the concept, but also the significant differences in the appreciation of global citizenship according to participants' life contexts. This exploratory study highlights the complexity of adapting a common international concept to a globalized world in which inequalities remain.

Purpose-This study aims to understand the social justice commitment and the pedagogical advantage... more Purpose-This study aims to understand the social justice commitment and the pedagogical advantage of teachers with a migrant background in Switzerland. Through semi-directive interviews with four of them, the research team analyses how these teachers use their background as a resource in their teaching practices. Linking their personal life experiences related to migration and schooling and their professional identity, results show that their history influences their teaching practices but moreover their commitment to social justice within school. Design/methodology/approach-For this study, the authors conducted four semi-directive interviews with teachers with a migrant background. The research team transcribed all the interviews and analyzed them through Nvivo software. The analytical process followed the logic of content analysis as developed by Miles and Huberman (2003). The research team used several layers of categories and codes to produce a deeper understanding of the data. On this basis, the authors refined their categories and codes and created research memoranda including all the information to establish the profile of each teacher interviewed. Findings-This study's data showed that "teachers with a migrant background" is a broad category of individuals, all entering the teaching profession with their own life experiences, their own relation to diversity and their own personal background. It also showed that teachers with a migrant background seem committed to social justice in different ways. This relates to Mantel's study (2021) that established three types of teachers with a migrant background. All of them developing a different pattern of commitment to social justice. Originality/value-This study aimed at understanding teachers with a migrant background's social justice commitment and pedagogical advantage in Switzerland (Canton of Geneva). If this field has been developed in North America, it is not well studied in Switzerland. Yet, the number of teachers with a migrant background is important in some part of the country and might be increasing in the next years. Exploring their potential is therefore a matter of representation and legitimation.

Quatorze entretiens avec des enseignantes ont été réalisés puis traités suivant la logique de l'analyse de contenu. Les résultats montrent un croisement entre des pratiques ajoutées, intégrées, mais aussi empêchées. L'analyse met en évidence une surreprésentation des objectifs interrelationnels par rapport au traitement d' enjeux relatifs aux injustices, et une intégration des approches interculturelles dans les pratiques enseignantes. Enfin, les résultats mettent en évidence le besoin de formation des enseignants dans le domaine des approches interculturelles.

For several years now, military conflict, climate change, lack of food, and other forces have com... more For several years now, military conflict, climate change, lack of food, and other forces have compelled many people around the globe to leave their countries and live in exile. As shown by exponentially increasing statistics, children are leaving their homes, sometimes their families, and their schools. Once they arrive in a country of resettlement, they face the challenge of new schooling. To understand how best to support these exile communities and those who work with them-students, their parents, teachers, schools-I searched the international literature for the main challenges of schooling refugee students in resettlement countries in the Global North. This literature review identifies the variety of their profiles, the challenges related to pre-and post-migration experiences, as well as all the intertwined issues taking place within the school: language learning, relationships with the teacher and with other students, teacher training, etc. These challenges are numerous and their intertwining only makes them more complex. Understanding them therefore seems to be the basis of any action in support of refugee education.

On the one hand, the school cannot ignore the permeability of the school precincts to the pupils’ religious beliefs. On the other, religion, as one of the dimensions of culture, can tend to adopt a hegemonic attitude not very reassuring for cultural relativism. In fact, taking religion seriously within the school means not underestimating its private and personal nature, which is likely to conflict with the public character of the educational institution.

These concepts are often associated with historical events, which have given them added significance and make their appropriation more complicated. Added to which, they can have different meanings according to the social or cultural group employing them, and according to their geographical or even their historical setting. For all these reasons, it is necessary to learn how to interpret these concepts, to understand the issues connected with their use and to discuss the ways they can be employed in education.

L’objectif est de comprendre comment ces derniers sont préparés à la diversité des publics scolaires et cela afin de répondre à une logique d’égalité des chances, de lutte contre les discriminations ou encore de représentation positive des cultures. La première étape de ce projet, qui fait l’objet de ce présent article, vise à identifier les tendances internationales en matière de formation des enseignants dans le domaine des approches interculturelles en Europe. Pour cela, nous avons mené une analyse du discours de trois organisations internationales (OCDE, Conseil de l’Europe et UNESCO) et proposons ici de présenter les premiers résultats. Nous les analyserons du point de vue de l’enseignement culturellement approprié. Nous exposerons également des points de tension et questionnements relatifs aux recommandations des trois organisations

La citoyenneté mondiale est un concept récent, discuté dans de nombreuses instances scientifiques... more La citoyenneté mondiale est un concept récent, discuté dans de nombreuses instances scientifiques et officielles, mais peu étudié de manière empirique. Notre étude se propose alors de comprendre comment il est reçu par les étudiants au Kazakhstan et en Suisse. Nos données, recueillies par questionnaire en ligne et analysées de différentes manières (statistique descriptive, analyse lexico-métrique, analyse de contenu) en fonction des types de questions, permettent de mettre en évidence les tensions relatives à la visée universaliste du concept, mais aussi les différences d’appréciation notables de la citoyenneté mondiale en fonction des contextes de vie des participants. Cette étude exploratoire met en évidence la complexité de l’adaptation d’un concept international commun à un monde globalisé dans lequel des inégalités subsistent.
