The embodiment of technology in education can make learning easier, more enjoyable, and more acce... more The embodiment of technology in education can make learning easier, more enjoyable, and more accessible. From Learning Machines to artificial intelligence (AI), educational technology has repeatedly tested its strength as an aider or a substitute to in-person teaching. During the COVID-19 pandemic international organisations promoted the idea of the transformation of education using technology. Comparison of their texts published in 2020 with texts published in 2021 indicates that much of the early enthusiasm concerning the transition from in-person to remote learning gave its position to more thoughtful accounts after considering the learning losses and students’ disappointment from the disruption of in-person relationships. This publication highlights aspects of education technology usually overlooked in futuristic accounts of education. Adopting a non-deterministic view of technology attempts to contribute to the more human-centred incorporation of technologies in education.

Without the face-to-face component, learning and teaching became a completely different experience for students and teachers. Recording the attitudes and perceptions of the undergraduate students on the new situation became necessary for the faculties to support them effectively. This research collected quantitative and qualitative data from 336 students of all the years of studies. The students preferred in-person teaching and reported higher engagement, learning, and understanding during classroom teaching. More senior students, who had developed face-to-face ties with their colleagues before the pandemic, found it easier to continue their interactions remotely. The first-year students found it challenging to develop relationships remotely, and they were the most frustrated. Overall, students in the first years of their studies perceived remote teaching as dissatisfactory compared to the more senior students. Similar to other publications, the respondents of this study challenged the effectiveness of remote teaching and the concomitant transition from in-person to remote social relationships.

This publication proposes an objective examination format for assessing students' ability to ... more This publication proposes an objective examination format for assessing students' ability to solve problems in Analogue Electronics. It suggests that a problem asking more than one question can take the form of a Problem-Based Multiple-Response (PBMR) item. Depending on the inter-relationship between the questions addressed in the stem, this paper identifies four types of items and suggests a scoring rule for each one of them. Issues related to the time slot given per item are also discussed. Examination results show that both the facility (F.I) and the discrimination (D.I) indices improve, and much guesswork is discarded whenever the scoring of an item considers the inter-relationship between the questions addressed in the stem. PBMR items addressing two or more fully inter-related questions are more suitable for testing the students' ability to solve problems when an objective examination is desirable. A carefully carved rhetoric bundles the reduced funding of education, the maturity of digital technologies and the experience of remote teaching during the COVID-19 restrictions to promote the idea of rewiring and rethinking education as a synonym for change. How will education look like after the COVID-19 crisis? Although an answer to this question cannot be precise at the moment since it involves different stakeholders, this publication attempts to pinpoint some aspects of the post-COVID-19 educational landscape as it emerges comparing various texts and sources.

This study presents the attitudes and perceptions of a sample of undergraduate students on remote... more This study presents the attitudes and perceptions of a sample of undergraduate students on remote teaching after face-to-face teaching was discontinued due to COVID-19 measures. The students expressed a preference for face-to-face teaching and reported higher cognitive engagement, learning and understanding associated with this teaching modality. Important differences were recorded on students’ replies depending on the year of studies. Overall, students who are at the first years of their studies appear to perceive the present situation of remote teaching, as more dissatisfactory compared to the more senior students.

The increasing number of students per class and the limited teaching resources are important fact... more The increasing number of students per class and the limited teaching resources are important factors for increasing the popularity of multiple-choice questions based (MCQ) exams amongst the academic tutors. Weighted grading of MCQ items is compatible with a wide range of options, therefore it can reward those students who have successfully answered the most demanding items. In the case of weighted scoring of a MCQ based exam, the weighting factor of each item can be obtained a priori from an expert of the domain, usually the lecturer, or a posteriori by some empirical method. The overall score of a student is calculated as the weighted average of the items successfully answered. This publication presents an iterative method for scoring MCQ based examinations. The proposed method attempts to achieve the best possible congruence of the overall student scores calculated as the weighted average based on expert and empirical weighting.
