This article aims to explain the current state of DNA Repair studies' global geography by focusing on the genesis of the community. Bibliometric data is used to localize scientific activities related to DNA Repair at the city level. The keyword "DNA Repair" was introduced first by American scientists. It started to spread after 1964 that is to say, after P. Howard-Flanders (Yale University), P. Hanawalt (Stanford University) and R. Setlow (Oak Ridge Laboratories) found evidence for Excision Repair mechanisms. It was the first stage in the emergence of an autonomous scientific community. In this article, we will try to assess to what extent the geo-history of this scientific field is determinant in understanding its current geography. Diffusion et structuration spatiale d'une question de recherche en biologie moléculaire Marion Maisonobe Résumé.— Cet article propose une approche géographique pour étudier l'évolution d'un collectif scientifique de dimension mondiale en biologie moléculaire. Un corpus de 908 publications représentatives d'une question de recherche est analysé. On montre que les résultats obtenus en bibliométrie sont extrêmement sensibles au niveau d'agrégation des données. L'analyse, longitudinale, se centre sur la diffusion spatiale de la question de recherche. Le recours à la théorie des graphes permet d'interroger les effets du temps sur la structure du réseau de copublications et par extension sur l'organisation spatiale du collectif scientifique. The Spatial Emergence of a Scientific Specialty - DNA Repair: In the study of science, the specialty is seen as the ideal level of analysis to understand the genesis and development of scientific communities. This article uses bibliometric data to analyze the emergence of DNA repair by testing a hybrid method to identify the specialty’s appearance in geographical space by focusing on the geographical trajectories of the pioneers in this field. We try to identify the professional mobility of researchers using these bibliometric data, and if possible to highlight the structural networks of places during the emergence stage of the specialty. These networks determine places as much as they are built by individual trajectories. In this way, we try to make a place for the geography of science in the field of social studies of science.
