This study complemented the debate for a better outdoor residential experience but gave a perspec... more This study complemented the debate for a better outdoor residential experience but gave a perspective from a developing country, using Ewet housing estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, as a case study. Combining field observation with a questionnaire, data obtained from 150 houses was analysed using descriptive statistics complemented with regression analysis. The results showed that over 60% of the houses were of high quality, however, they were overshadowed by the surrounding lacklustre open space areas. The visual quality of the organisation of the landscape elements had a very strong positive relationship with contribution to amenity value of the neighbourhood. Preference for outdoor activities with recreation, motivation to beautify the premises, and to have a good setting for the house all appeared as positive factors of poor quality development of a residential site. Non-availability of good site design/lack of specification by the housing authority for site development, and inadequate space and site problems, were found to be the major constraints affecting residential site development. The awareness factor had a strong positive relationship with the quality of site development. The study concluded by suggesting a conceptual foundation for improving the process and quality of residential site development in developing countries.

Hence, this study examined female student participation in recreational activities. Data were obtained through questionnaire administration on female students. Information obtained from the center of information technology revealed 9,685 registered female students across 11 faculties. A total of 291 respondents were selected for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that recreation facilities are abundantly provided in the University, and most students are aware of their existence. The study further revealed that female students participate less in sporting activities except for jogging, walking, listening to music, and reading. Due to the inadequate attention given to daylighting in lecture rooms in tropical wet and dry cli... more Due to the inadequate attention given to daylighting in lecture rooms in tropical wet and dry climate, this study, using field measurement, evaluates combined daylighting strategies in three lecture rooms labelled LLH, BMS and ANB with distinct bilateral glass louvre windows, window floor ratio, orientation and shading strategies. It determines the difference in illuminance in varied sky conditions, and the relationship between the strategies. Results revealed that under the clear sky condition, combined strategies in LLH and BMS rooms were effective in illuminance performance except during evening hours while the one in ANB was ineffective. Both rooms recorded poor daylight uniformity. Similar performance was obtained under overcast sky but they produced effective daylight uniformity. An effective daylighting was obtained throughout the process in the intermediate sky condition, however, the strategy in ANB room was ineffective in the evening hours. Only ANB room had an effective daylight uniformity in the intermediate sky. The strategy in LLH room had a strong positive relationship with BMS's. The strategy in LLH had a weak positive correlation with ANB's, but ANB's strategy had strong positive correlation with BMS's. Overall, the study contributes to the performance of combined daylighting strategies in tropical wet and dry climate.

Across the globe, the corollary of Green Cost Premium (GCP) obstructs the implementation of Susta... more Across the globe, the corollary of Green Cost Premium (GCP) obstructs the implementation of Sustainable Buildings (SB). Extensive studies into GCP proliferate, but the research norms rarely traversed theoretical contexts of GCP. The purpose of this paper was to explore the drivers of GCP from the contexts of the prevailing practice of SB using the theoretical lens of practice theory. Secondary literature comprising mainly peer-reviewed publications spanning 20years was critically reviewed. The results show some uncertainty regarding the effect of prevailing practice on the size of GCP due to the dearth of empirical studies. Secondary literature, however, showed that GCP is liable to variations in practice related to the level of knowledge and the implementation processes. The knowledge domain argued that the scope of GCP depends on regional issues including misperceptions, cost management deficiencies and sustainability accounting gaps. During implementation, GCP could also modify in response to changes in cost drivers, factors limiting innovative processes and challenges and barriers in the project environment. Engagements with practice have, however failed to embed this understanding into SB project implementation decisions and dynamics, as limited documented efforts aimed at mitigating the GCP exist. The paper offers a non-conventional perspective for assessing the dynamics of converging regional practices in SB that can contribute to GCP as well as lower the GCP when the practices are improved. GCP is susceptible to practice variations and answers to projects practices across regions. This portrays that the GCP can lessen through innovation of practice elements such as competencies and inputs (materials and procedures). The elements of scientific inquiry for GCP must be disconnected from currently established knowledge about SB systems to regional practices related to knowledge and procedures.

With the rise in remote learning, global competitiveness and collaborative world characterized by... more With the rise in remote learning, global competitiveness and collaborative world characterized by deployment of information communication technology (ICT) in all spheres of learning and practice, architectural students often find themselves at the pivot of dualism constrained by impeding factors existing as an outcome of past and present contrasting cultures in architectural advancement, along with their innate values and methods of expression. One of such is the insistence by some schools of architecture in Nigeria that undergraduate students' design studio courses must be done through manual drafting. However, it is observed that students are more inclined to technological adaptations due to 'age' (revolutionary influence). Thus, this paper investigates the Effect of Computer Aided Design (CAD) on Architecture Undergraduate Students' Manual drafting skill. University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria was purposefully selected for this study. Data was collected by means of structured questionnaires administered to students from the first year to the fourth year in the 2018/2019 academic session. Data obtained was analysed using descriptive statistics. Results revealed that 88.6% of students strongly agreed and 6.7% agreed that students prefer to use of CAD to Manual drafting. The sum of percentage in agreement 95.3% indicates significant difference in students' preference of CAD over manual drafting. This research validates that manual drafting should be used simultaneously with CAD in the training of undergraduate architecture students as a fundamental tool and should be juxtaposed with intensive digital drafting for standard output with future benefits.

In recent years, the concept of using Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) for building performance as... more In recent years, the concept of using Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) for building performance assessment has attracted much attention globally because of its benefits in enhancing future design decisions. However, developing countries give little or no concern to the practice of improving design outcomes using POEs. In Nigeria, buildings are rarely evaluated once they are handed over to the clients. This study explored the use of POE as a sustainable tool to assess building performance in developing countries with Nigeria as a case study. The method of data collection was firstly through a systematic literature review where existing and current conceptual body of knowledge in peer-reviewed journals, electronic databases (Science Direct and Google Scholar), conference proceedings, and published articles were appraised; with a specific focus on key issues of POE, such as: its definition, evolution, phases, levels, dimensions, benefits and application as a sustainable tool for building performance. The findings from the literature informed the use of interviews to gather the perception of building professionals on the use of POE for building performance assessment. A total of 117 building professionals including architects, engineers, planners and surveyors were interviewed. The data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistics (frequency count and simple percentages). The study findings revealed that building occupants are a valuable source of information on building performance and that POE methods should be simple and building typology specific. The interviewees suggested that POEs could provide useful benchmarking data to establish best practices for delivering sustainable building developments in Nigeria. It is expected that the findings of this study will encourage policy makers to consider regulations that will enhance the use of POEs for building performance analyses to feed forward the positive and negative lessons learned to improve the design of current and future building developments in developing countries.

Experiment, being one of the methodologies applicable in research, has not been given appropriate... more Experiment, being one of the methodologies applicable in research, has not been given appropriate attention in architecture unlike other disciplines such as education, psychology and sociology. This may be connected to the view that architecture is a core design discipline with little interest in research writing and its multidisciplinary nature with relatively diverse methodological approaches. This study, using a desktop research strategy, presents an overview of the background with methodological insight into the use of experimental research in architecture. Types and sources of data for experimental research, basic concepts involved in experimental studies such as relationship between independent and dependent variables, treatment, causality and randomization are explored. From problem identification to documentation of the findings, steps to conducting an experimental research to writing the paper for publishing in journals and conferences are suggested. The study concludes that the knowledge and appropriate application of experimental research could support design evolution in architecture.

The application of daylighting in green affordable housing movement is as a result of its afforda... more The application of daylighting in green affordable housing movement is as a result of its affordability, availability, energy efficiency, high performance capacity and great health impact and this has been established in the present work. Its application is one thing, but the other matter worthy of architects' concern is the burgeoning variables that affect daylighting design. The purpose of this paper is to explore and bring to the fore these design variables as they affect daylighting design in pursuit of green affordable housing. Systematic identification, critical review and careful analysis technique of past works was the method used and the pool of literature revealed a 4-macro-system typology which includes variables at the climate level (the source), at the built environment level (the 1 st interceptor), at the building level (the 2 nd interceptor) and at the room level (the receiver) as the factors that affect daylighting design. The understanding of these variables by the architects is the beginning of wisdom in daylighting design as a key to green affordable housing.
