Objective: Concerns related to radiation exposure associated with three-dimensional (3D) imaging ... more Objective: Concerns related to radiation exposure associated with three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques of the dentomaxillofacial area have recently increased because exposure to ionizing radiation is known to be harmful. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for humans and micro-CT (μCT) for animals are the current 3D imaging standard to visualize the craniofacial skeleton. This study assessed the use of a non-ionizing imaging technique, known as SWIFT (Sweep Imaging with Fourier Transform) MRI, for the 3D analysis of human and mice craniofacial skeletons. Method: Reference standard craniofacial images of one adult human using CBCT system (8.9 seconds exposure time; FOV: 23cm x 17cm) and eight E18.5 mouse heads (two Wnt5a-/-, two Ror2-/-, four wild-type) using μCT (90kV, current: 91μA; 2000 projections) were compared to SWIFT MRI obtained using a 4T large-bore magnet and a 9.4T small-bore magnet, respectively. Objectives: A recently developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, called SWeep Imaging... more Objectives: A recently developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, called SWeep Imaging with Fourier Transform (SWIFT), unlike other MRI technique, is able to visualize all dental tissues and is highly sensitive to pathology. The aim of this work is to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of SWIFT based dental MRI for clinical use. Methods: In-vivo SWIFT experiments were performed in a 90-cm, 4T-magnet interfaced to a Varian DirectDrive console. Radiofrequency (RF) transmission and signal reception were performed with custom fabricated coil with an intra-oral configuration. In-vivo imaging was performed on normal healthy volunteers determined to be exempt by the Institutional Review Board. Results: The jaw motion was greatly reduced by dedicated SWIFT-compatible coil holder and residual rigid body motions were subsequently compensated during image reconstruction. The data receiver is configured to receive radial ordered magnetic resonance data. The sinogram generator is configured to generate a first sinogram corresponding to a view angle as a function of a readout direction for the magnetic resonance data. The processor is configured to generate an oscillogram having an angular frequency axis. The oscillogram corresponds to a Fourier transform of the first sinogram. The filter module is configured to selectively filter a peak in a projection formed along a selected axis of the oscillogram, the peak being related to an interference signal such as an RF interference.
