This devastating event in Scottish history took place between 1750 and 1860, and was the forced removal of thousands of Highlanders from their ancestral homeland - all in the name of profit and greed. The physical and cultural impact that this shameful time had on the Highlands was astronomical, and particularly affected Gaeldom. 

This statue by Gerald Laing is in Helmsdale, a village in Sutherland that was established in 1814 for the resettlement of those who were evicted from nearby straths. Kildonan Strath, which Helmsdale is closest to, was particularly infamous for the brutality enforced on locals in removing them from their homes.
