Centrally located in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, Commune’s new studio resides in a historic 1924 Spanish Colonial building. Designing our first new studio in over a decade provided an incredible opportunity to reimagine our environment to best facilitate our workflow and is designed with a focus on function and process in every detail. The original 1000 square foot house above Tomales Bay was built in the early 60’s by legendary local architect, Alex Riley, for himself. He sold it years later and in the early aughts, he designed a primary bedroom wing and a guest house for a new owner. Our client purchased the property a few years ago and brought us on board to make program changes that better fit their lifestyle, as well as add layers of texture, color, and pattern…help make it theirs. This residence, located on a bluff above a surf break in Santa Cruz, California was designed in collaboration with Feldman Architecture. The house, lined inside and out with Monterey Cypress salvaged locally by Evan Shively at Arborica, was handcrafted with a keen eye for detail by RJL Construction. Other natural materials; including soapstone, plaster, concrete and unlacquered copper and brass, were chosen for their propensity to patina with time, particularly in the salt air. A conceit…

Interiors for a historic Craftsman built in 1915 in the Berkeley Hills and later renovated by Studio Geiger. The client wanted interiors that were “beautiful but practical at the same time” for themselves and their two young daughters to enjoy on a daily basis for many years to come. We brought in natural light and layers of pattern and color, as well as a mix of American handcrafted furniture and early 20th century Scandinavian, Brazilian and Austrian furnishings.
