Claude Lanzmann's nine-hour documentary Shoah (1985) is a rich source of knowledge on the Nazi ex... more Claude Lanzmann's nine-hour documentary Shoah (1985) is a rich source of knowledge on the Nazi extermination of Jews in Central Europe. Its main material consists of interviews with people who witnessed the Holocaust, conducted in the very locations of the wartime events. The present paper analyses an iconic scene from Chełmno on Ner, where between 1940-43 and later 1944-45 the first Nazi death camp was located. A group of locals-gathered in front of the parish church, around one of the survivors of the camp-recall the events, sometimes in stunning technical detail. Their Polish utterances are translated into French; English subtitles are based on the French of the interpreter. The Polish linguistic material is not neutral: it is marked with dialectal and sociolectal features; the speakers engage in conversation on the side, comment on the situation of the interview in various ways, verbal and non-verbal. In the translation, both into French and English, sentences are skipped, the plurality of voices is flattened, and differences in memory are smoothed out. The resulting text is rather a summary than a translation. It also offers an alternative translation, which aims at giving voice to the actual people of Chełmno and acknowledging as fully as possible the complication and difficulty of memory construction through language, especially in a highly traumatic area. It hopes to offer insights into the bystander position in Holocaust discourse.

A Map of New England Johna Fostera wydaje się przedstawiać dobrze zorganizowaną sieć angielskich ... more A Map of New England Johna Fostera wydaje się przedstawiać dobrze zorganizowaną sieć angielskich miast na terenie kolonii Massachusetts. Mapa ta została jednak dołączona do wydanej w Bostonie w 1677 r. narracji Williama Hubbarda A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England, która traktuje o konflikcie kolonistów z rdzennymi mieszkańcami Ameryki podczas tzw. wojny króla Filipa. Uważna lektura tekstu Hubbarda pozwala zauważyć, że jego narracja jest zbudowana wokół walki „ludzi Boga” z ich „pogańskimi sąsia- dami”, co jednoznacznie nawiązuje do purytańskiej wyobraźni, rozumienia świata i dramatyzowania rzeczywistości poprzez wpisywanie w nią etosu walki z niewidzialnym zagrożeniem, pochodzącym nie z tego świata. Kluczem do odkrycia napięcia ukrytego w mapie Fostera jest naniesienie na mapę opisanych przez Hubbarda tzw. przypadków Bożej opatrzności (providences) oraz wczytanie się w utwór Benjamina Tompsona Marlburyes Fate (1676). Autorka pro- ponuje ponowne odczytanie Mapy Nowej Anglii Fostera w kontekście wymienionych utworów.

The article focuses on the burial rituals, funeral art and New England practice of converse in th... more The article focuses on the burial rituals, funeral art and New England practice of converse in the 17th and 18th century New England. Analyzing diaries, elegies, sepulchral iconography and colonists' everyday life experience, the author proves that the main aim of these practices was to express their grief and maintain a close relationship with their departed family members. The presented material also demonstrates a very specific and strong bond developed between the living and the dead - which accompanied by the vanitas theme and the omnipresence of death - resulted in developing reality in which the supernatural realm blends with the natural, familiar world.

The main aim of this paper is to analyse the connection between fictional space created by writer... more The main aim of this paper is to analyse the connection between fictional space created by writers of horror and weird fiction (H.P. Lovecraft, S. King, T.O. Heuvelt) and tradition, geography as well as history of New England. As it turns out, the authors’ imaginary worlds are drawn from New England colonial heritage and topography. Such space like haunted house, wilderness or American suburbs could be perceived as “narrative blanks” which function as “vessels” filled up with connotations that arise from 300 years of New England history and culture.
Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie związku pomiędzy przestrzenią tworzoną przez autorów opowieści grozy (H.P. Lovecraft, S. King, T.O. Heuvelt) a historią oraz tradycją Nowej Anglii. Jak się bowiem okazuje elementy świata przedstawionego mają swe pierwowzory w rzeczywistym krajobrazie oraz topografii Nowej Anglii. Takie miejsca jak nawiedzone domy, gęste lasy [wilderness] oraz amerykańskie przedmieścia stanowią funkcjonują obecnie jako „narracyjne punkty” przenoszące konotacje i informacje, które były doń wtłaczane przez blisko 300 lat.

The author decides to present three case studies which stand for life of three very different women. The first part presents the story of Roxanne, a character from Daniel Defoe's novel. The second one brings the story of Margaret Hardenbroek, a famous Dutch she-merchant from New Amsterdam. Finally, the last woman is Ann Maylen - a widow from Newport.

The main aim of this paper is to analyze space in H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. Particular atte... more The main aim of this paper is to analyze space in H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. Particular attention is paid to the connection between the author's works and New England traditions and landscapes. As it turns out Lovecraft created his imaginary worlds drawing from New England colonial heritage - colonial houses, plain puritan interiors, Dutch fireplaces and old burial grounds. As a result, Lovecraft's narratives are "overloaded" with evil and terror; therefore, his New England im mythical and hypothetical place due to the simple fact that space which could absorb such a great load of terror does not exist.

The article focuses on the fear of unknown and its representation on medieval and renaissance map... more The article focuses on the fear of unknown and its representation on medieval and renaissance maps (e.g. The Hereford Mappa Mundi [c. 1300], the map of Iceland f rom Theatrum Orbis Terrarum [1590] or The Map of New-England [1677]). By analysing the given examples, it is shown that maps should be read as texts of culture which function as a record of how unknown and indescribable space was perceived in the past. Apparently, foreign and distant lands were perceived as dangerous places inhab- ited by hostile tribes and guarded by sea monsters.

Since 2012, new translation strategies have subsequently been observed and this gradual yet notable change is exemplified by Jin Di’s equivalence effect translation theory. By proposing four stages of work on translation and focusing on spirit, facts, and the artistic imaginary of the original text, Jin Di’s theory offers a revolutionary way of presenting Lovecraft’s world in all its splendor and glory to Polish readers.

Revulsion in Monstruous Creations in Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s Literary Works' aims at presenting Lovecraft’s short stories as full of eerie beings, which could be described as conglomerates of danger and curiosity; however, they always remain unnamed and undefined. Analysing descriptions of antagonists, the chapter attempts to find the origins of their construction in medical conditions and deformities, which are characteristic for the members of the Freak Shows. In accordance with Noël Carroll’s theory of art-horror, Winfried Menninghaus’s theory of disgust and Julia Kriteva’s definition of the abject, the pivotal role of disease symptoms and deformations is defined as one of the crucial elements in creating the atmosphere of horror in Lovecraft’s short stories.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the Polish translations of "The Dunwich Horror". It focuses on the lexem horror and its dual role within the text — being a proper name of the threat that comes to Dunwich and creating a specific atmosphere of „unknown” horror which is defined according to Edmund Burke’s aesthetic theory and Noël Carroll’s art-horror. It was shown that clarification and overtranslation of this lexem have a great impact on the Polish translations and as a result the atmosphere of the story can be distorted.

The aim of this paper is to examine the connection between the linguistic norms and the developme... more The aim of this paper is to examine the connection between the linguistic norms and the development of the plot formats in H. P. Lovecraft’s short stories. In his works language should be considered not only as a communicative tool, but also as a vital part of a plot. Deviation from linguistic norms is depicted in dialects, archaic forms and disintegration of the protagonists’ language. According to Noël Carroll there are fourteen possible horror-story formats from which two are used in the article and combined with the examples of the deviation from linguistic norms. In the onset/ discovery format, one can notice dialects and archaic forms which do not affect the language of the protagonist but create a context for the whole story. In the onset/discovery/confirmation/confrontation format the main character’s utterance becomes disintegrated - it transforms from the 18th-century English to 15th-century Elizabethan style, then changes into Latin and Aklo – the language of the demons. In both formats, deviation from linguistic norms is a signal of terrible evens which can bring doom on the protagonist.

The author introduces, in theoretical part, main assumptions of Noël Carroll's art-horror theory. In accordance with this theory and Julia Kristeva's idea of abjection, shapeless, deformed creatures invoke disgust, horror and fear. Through short analysis of the description of shoggoths the author presents various translation strategies, which result in contradictory picture of the monsters' elements.

Analiza przekładowa wybranych fragmentów powieści Neila Gaimana "American Gods".
Wszelkiego rodzaju fizyczne deformacje, zaburzenia psychiczne, a także odstępstwa od ustalonych przez społeczność Nowej Anglii norm nie były mile widziane wśród członków siedemnastowiecznej wspólnoty purytańskiej i niejednokrotnie spotykały się z ostracyzmem społecznym. Ciało zdeformowane wzbudzało często ciekawość jednak znacznie więcej było emocji negatywnych – aż do XIX wieku ciała osobliwe traktowano podobnie jak ciała osób chorych bądź skazanych. Wykluczenie społeczne powodowało, że owe „wynaturzenia” stawały się elementami miejscowych podań i legend. Jako elementy odpychające i nieprzystające do ustalonych norm, wzbudzały one odrazę i wstręt. Co więcej, ze względu na trudności z ich jednoznacznym zaklasyfikowaniem, opisaniem i zdefiniowaniem podsycały lęk i strach. W proponowanym przeze mnie referacie przedstawię, jak prawdziwe przypadki deformacji, zaburzeń psychicznych oraz odstępstw od norm społecznych (informacje pozyskane z akt procesów sądowych, dzienników pierwszych kolonistów) znalazły odzwierciedlenie w tekstach kultury (podania, legendy, opowiadania) i na trwale zapisały się w tradycji Nowej Anglii.
The presentation focuses on domestic violence in colonial New England. Based on the Plymouth Court Records, I present the examples of domestic violence registered before and after introducing Massachusetts Body of Liberties (1641), which forbidden the beating of spouses and was supposed to protect the liberties of wives, children and servants. The analysed material shows interesting results – after introducing Massachusetts Body of Liberties nothing changed. Religious beliefs occurred so strong that even enforcing a criminal code that punished many types of family violence did not break the wheel of violence which was spinning around New England.
