Architecture and Urbanism

The museum phenomena which is taking place in the last decades in the major cities of the world and the persistent custom of charging renowned architectural offices, mostly foreigners, provoke a relfection on how these architects are taking into consideration specific aspects of the site and the pre-existences of the place. Therefore, this paper explores the case of the museum of the Ibere Camargo Foundation, designed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and inaugurated in 2008 in Porto Alegre, taking into account a literature about the sense of place in order to ascertain to what extent this building meets universal demands for museum while considering the cultural characteristics of the site.

No âmbito internacional, questões de gênero vem sendo introduzidas nos campo da arquitetura e urbanismo há algumas décadas (HAYDEN, 1982; COLOMINA, 1992; BETSKY, 1997; RENDELL, J; PENNER, B; BORDEN, I, 1999). No Brasil, este tema também vem sendo discutido e pesquisado desde a mesma época, porém em outros campos disciplinares, como nas ciências sociais, econômicas, políticas, antropologia, história e, em especial, no que ficou conhecido como geografia feminista (MASSEY, 1994). A maior parte destes estudos teve como enfoque inicial as teorias feministas, com ênfase na relação entre mulher e espaço doméstico (HAYDEN, 1982; COLOMINA, 1992). Posteriormente, este campo é ampliado, em parte por influência da teoria queer (BUTLER, 1990, 1993; PRECIADO, 2002), para uma perspectiva mais ampla de gênero e dos temas que este envolve. No campo da arquitetura e urbanismo especificamente, estas iniciativas ainda são limitadas, visto que boa parte das publicações é em outros idiomas e de difícil acesso, e as raras edições que possuem traduções são compêndios de textos (NESBITT, 2006; RUBINO, GRINOVER, 2009; MONTANER, MUXI, 2014). Diante deste panorama, o propósito deste artigo é: fazer um breve estado da arte da literatura existente sobre gênero no campo da arquitetura e urbanismo; discorrer sobre as experiências recentes promovidas pelo Núcleo de Estudos em Espaço e Gênero (NEG), um coletivo composto por discentes e docentes de graduação e pós-graduação da área de arquitetura e urbanismo da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), como forma de apresentar os principais trabalhos sobre o tema desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento na instituição; e, por fim, com base nos pontos anteriores, identificar e discutir desafios e potencialidades no ensino e pesquisa de gênero no campo da Arquitetura e Urbanismo.

Foi na ocasião da visita às obras de Mies (860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments, Crown Hall/IIT e Farnsworth House, em Plano, Illinois), na loja da fundação Farnsworth, que tive contato com o livro Women and the Making of the Modern House: A Social and Architectural History, de Alice T. Friedman, 1998. Esta resenha tem, portanto, o intuito de tornar disponível um material em português sobre o livro, como também de avançar sobre o que já existe sobre este.

Este artigo explora a relação entre sítio e arquitetura, analisando três edifícios de museus de arte contemporânea, a partir das reflexões do crítico e teórico norte-americano David Leatherbarrow (2000, 2004). Os edifícios são projetos do arquiteto português Álvaro Siza: o Centro Galego de Arte Contemporânea (Santiago de Compostela, Espanha, 1988-93), o Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Fundação de Serralves (Porto, Portugal, 1991-99) e a sede da Fundação Iberê Camargo (Porto Alegre, Brasil, 2000-08). Distintos em localização e semelhantes em tipologia, os edifícios são entendidos por meio de cinco estratégias projetuais de relacionamento com o sítio.

O presente artigo discute cinco estratégias projetuais que exploram a relação entre edifício e sítio, elaboradas à luz de uma noção ampliada do conceito de topografia, com base no exame da Igreja de Santa Maria, obra do arquiteto português Álvaro Siza, projetada e construída entre 1990 e 1996, em Marco de Canaveses, Portugal). Neste sentido, os conceitos de estratégia projetual (Moneo, 2008) e topografia (Leatherbarrow, 2000, 2004) deram suporte à descrição e análise do referido projeto, através do qual foram identificadas as seguintes estratégias: 1) Apreensão do sítio e enquadramento da liberdade projetual; 2) A construção como cultivo; 3) Terraplenagem como estruturação; 4) Fragmentação versus frontalidade; 5) Tempo e materialidade. Estas estratégias foram elaboradas a partir do estudo dos dados levantados sobre a obra (plantas, croquis, fotografias, maquetes e textos do próprio arquiteto), bem como de registros e observações realizadas in loco (por meio de visitas ao local e de entrevistas ao arquiteto), através de uma abordagem fenomenológica guiada pelas reflexões extraídas do referencial teórico. As estratégias projetuais também funcionam como um método de análise de projetos, ao possibilitar uma aproximação gradual da obra, de seus antecedentes e implantação até soluções técnicas e detalhes. Para tal, o artigo estrutura-se em: 1) Introdução; 2) Referencial Teórico: Da relação entre sítio e arquitetura; 3) Objeto empírico: A Igreja de Santa Maria em Marco de Canaveses 4) As estratégias projetuais; 5) Considerações finais. Deste modo, o trabalho traz contribuições tanto específicas, ao lançar um olhar particular sobre a obra do arquiteto, quanto mais amplas, ao fomentar um conjunto de estratégias projetuais de relação entre arquitetura e sítio que podem ser estendidas para a compreensão e elaboração de outros projetos.

Este artigo discute a interação entre leiautes espaciais efêmeros e perenes que, embora observáveis em diversos tipos edilícios, são particularmente evidentes em espaços expositivos, e propõe três modelos descritivos – complexo, genérico e específico – capazes de capturar e relacionar suas possibilidades máximas, mínimas e intermédias de desempenho das funções genéricas de ocupação e movimento. Para tal, utiliza a Bienal de São Paulo como objeto empírico, expressão que designa um conjunto de exposições e um edifício, cuja configuração espacial é simultaneamente descrita como complexa e genérica, e que, desde 1957, é reconfigurado a cada dois anos para sediar o evento – composto por exposições de arte moderna e contemporânea de grande especificidade. This is a study that deals with the creation of peopleÕs lifestyle expectation, part of a broad investigation on the evolution of domestic space in Recife, Brazil. It is focused on the apartment building, nowadays the most popular middle-class housing form.
It looks at the advertisement campaigns publicised by housing developers, with the interest to identify and describe the attributes used in these promotional pieces. Three main integrated categorical attributes were found: location, architectural program and the name of the development. It is suggested that it is through these attributes that expectations are created and recreated, generating a certain lifestyle culture, also identifiable in a peculiar symbolic division of the city into distinct territories

Modern agenda gives to function a fundamental position in architecture. This problem is addressed in many architectural texts, either by describing the functional dimension of buildings, or by prescribing design methods to solve and formally express it. This study tries to understand how these ideas are embedded into modern buildings, by observing the effects of the methodological procedure for classifying and grouping activities into sectors in structuring spatial systems.

To explore this problem, a sample of 140 modern houses of Recife, Brazil, built between 1950 and 1970, is examined. The houses are assessed by means of their sectors' organisation, represented as justified graphs, and analysed syntactically. Depth, integration and space type analysis are used to picture the structure of the sectors'arrangements.

The study reveals that modern houses of Recife are submitted to the classification and grouping procedure, arranging domestic life into sectors, interconnected by transitional spaces. As a paradigm, the sectors were an idea which architects thought
with. Despite the vast number of possible arrangements, only few patterns were found, represented by two sectors' genotypes. This suggests that generic laws restricted the number of possible combinations of sectors to a number of suitable systems. The
paper concludes by proposing that these restrictive laws were generated in order to conciliate architectural concepts to social requirements.

This paper presents a study on changes in domestic space organisation through time. The object of study is a set of vernacular, eclectic and modern dwellings, built in Recife, Brazil,
from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The study suggests that these houses were preliminary social manifestation, controlled by social codes of behaviour, but evolved as
spatial considerations, with social codes becoming a minor issue. Pre-modern houses impose restrictions to the use of a flexible plan, whereas modern houses have already embedded in their layout the restrictions of space use. Modern houses, by fixing more strongly functional values into space configuration, turn dwellings into synchronic oriented systems, rather than becoming diachronically adaptable.

Buildings in general classify, group and order activities and users in sectors. Evidences suggest that sectors’ organisation is more determinant in space configuration than previously supposed.
Its effects are pervasive enough to determine, to a certain extent, the configurational behaviour of buildings, and to allow, within a certain margin of error, a prediction of how depth is distributed by a simple analysis of the sectors’ diagram.

This paper presents a historical and morphological analysis of the City of Ann Arbor, USA. The objective of this study is to identify the dynamic process that transforms an idea into a real city that is rich, diverse, and heterogeneous. It discusses the morphological changes that the city has undergone, from its day of foundation in 1824 as a small frontier village to Ann Arbor in 2004, a bustling university town.
