Wat eerst startte als een vingeroefening is uiteindelijk uitgegroeid tot een meer uitgebreide review van bedrijfsindelingen voor beleidsanalyse, steeds met de inzet ervan in de bedrijfsmodellering in het achterhoofd. Tijdens de studie werd de erg gefragmenteerde kennis die over dit specifieke domein bestaat verzameld, met de bedoeling een zo volledig mogelijke inventarisatie te kunnen voorleggen en te analyseren. Eco-efficiency was measured as a combination of nitrogen (N) use efficiency and energy use efficiency, where N use efficiency (l milk kg<sup align="right"> -1 N surplus) is the ratio between the amount of produced milk and the farm-gate N surplus (= N input − N output). Energy use efficiency (l milk 100 MJ<sup align="right"> -1 ) is the ratio between the amount of produced milk and the total (direct + indirect) energy input. Between 1989–1990 and 2000–2001, average N use efficiency increased from 27 to 40 l milk kg<sup align="right"> -1 N surplus and average energy use efficiency increased from 22 to 27 l milk 100 MJ<sup align="right"> -1 , indicating an overall increase of eco-efficiency of the Flemish dairy farms during those periods. The farms with the highest eco-efficiencies were characterised by a higher milk production, a lower N surplus, a lower energy input and a higher gross value-added. The latter shows that on the studied farms, eco-efficiency went hand in hand with better economic results.
ABSTRACT In a general mindset of ‘local elaboration’ of sustainable development, cities are logic... more ABSTRACT In a general mindset of ‘local elaboration’ of sustainable development, cities are logical loci for action: they do not only concentrate (future) consumption and production – and are hence at the origin of unsustainability ‘symptoms’-, they simultaneously are the operational units in which concrete actions can be envisaged, designed, (politically) facilitated and effectively rolled out. Whenever cities engage in this innovative, ambitious and responsible task of change for integrated sustainability, an undoubtedly major amount of learning emerges; and vice versa, sound knowledge/best practices on how to proceed with local sustainability oriented change processes could be a firm support for local actors in their quest for effective and efficient action. In this paper, we present ‘Urban Transition Labs’ (UTL) as settings in which real life trajectories of sustainable development in cities are deployed and at the same time carefully observed; in a co-creative collaboration between actors and researchers (transdisciplinary research). Thereby, a transition management approach is applied, resulting in a cycle of five distinct phases: (a) process design and system analysis, (b) problem structuring and envisioning, (c) back casting, determining major pathways and agenda setting, (d) experimenting and (e) monitoring and evaluation. The process is guided by a ‘Transition-team’ that co-designs the process and feeds in relevant information to the city transition ‘arenas’. These arenas are the actual initial incubators of change; they are crewed by local frontrunners that are considered as engaged visionary people with diverse backgrounds. The findings of arenas feed a further participatory process to engage the relevant city stakeholders into action. In this paper, we want to present the UTL as a potentially valuable concept to support a ‘walking-the-talk’ of sustainable development by cities; and we share the first impressions on specific barriers and enablers that could determine the effectiveness of the envisaged approach.

Around the year 2010, the research field of “transition studies” was gaining increasing attention... more Around the year 2010, the research field of “transition studies” was gaining increasing attention and was developing into a true research community with the advent of the “Sustainability Transitions Research Network” (STRN), the organisation of annual international sustainability transition (IST) conferences, and the launch of a scientific journal, named “Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions”. Concerning the topics addressed within this emerging field, the domain of agriculture was studied by only a small number scholars. This constituted an important omission given the major role this domain plays in global challenges like food provision, depletion of minerals, curbing CO2 emissions, etc.
Seeking to fill this gap, researchers from ‘Wageningen University & Research’ in the Netherlands (WUR) and the ‘Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique’ in France (INRA) took the initiative to organize a first international workshop on the topic of “System Innovation towards Sustainable Agriculture” (SISA). This first SISA workshop was held in June 2010 in Lelystad, the Netherlands, and its proceedings were published online in 2012. The INRA Science in Society unit organized the second SISA workshop in Paris from 22-23 May 2014 that was hosted by AgroParisTech. Financial support was received from INRA, IFRIS and WUR. This proceedings is a result from the second SISA workshop.
