McDreamy will soon face off against a teenage Dexter Morgan: Patrick Dempsey has joined Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter prequel Original Sin as a series regular, the streamer/network announced Thursday.
The Grey’s Anatomy vet will play Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide who has a decades-long relationship with Harry Morgan (played by Christian Slater).
“Patrick Dempsey is a beloved actor who is internationally known for the iconic characters he has played and his performances,” said Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios Chris McCarthy in a statement. “We are thrilled to have him join our all-star cast of Dexter: Original Sin, the highly anticipated origin story of the franchise.”
Dexter: Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami, 15 years before the original series, as Dexter “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” according to the official synopsis. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Other previously announced cast members include Patrick Gibson (Shadow & Bone) as Dexter Morgan, Molly Brown (Billions) as Debra Morgan, James Martinez (Love, Victor) as Angel Batista, Christina Milian (Grandfathered) as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) as Vince Masuka and Reno Wilson (Good Girls) as Bobby Watt.
Dexter vet Clyde Phillips will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Michael C. Hall, who famously portrayed the titular character for eight seasons plus the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, will also executive-produce.

Since he’s the one Miami Metro employee who wasn’t on the original show, I wonder if he’ll leave the station of his own accord (or end up in an underwater garbage bag).
Not the first time he faced off against a serial killer.
Will this prequel play on ParShowtime, or will it only stream on Paramount+?
If paramount/showtime wanted a Dexter series so badly why kill him in the revival? Should have continued that show for several seasons instead of recasting everyone that made the original great. This sounds like a one and done to me. If you want to exploit an IP, then do it right guys.
Dexter is still out there living as a lumberjack as far as I’m concerned, the revival was garbage.
Patrick & Christian…love it!! Hope the show is good.
It’s ridiculous that everyone at Miami Metro is supposed to have worked there for 20+ years in a row just so we can see young versions of Angel / Maria etc. What kind of workplace is actually like that?
Also, they should have called this Young Dexter
To this day, original Dexter is one of my favorite TV series. The revival was awful because the last 15 minutes ruined the entire thing. And this prequel?? Where do I even begin? It does NOT need to happen. We learned about Dexter’s origin in flashbacks throughout the entire series, especially in the final season with Dr. Vogel and the development of the code. This is a story that does not need to be told.
Dexter: CODE would be a more apt title, if the premise of the show is the beginning of his moral ‘code’.
