Paramount+ with Showtime is taking a stab at a Dexter prequel series, and it’s bringing in some new blood.
Patrick Gibson (Shadow and Bone, The OA) will play a young Dexter Morgan in the upcoming 10-episode series Dexter: Original Sin, TVLine has learned, taking over the role from original star Michael C. Hall. Additionally, Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) will play Dexter’s adoptive dad, homicide detective Harry Morgan, played by James Remar on the original Dexter, and Molly Brown (Billions) will play Dexter’s sister Debra, originally played by Jennifer Carpenter.
Dexter: Original Sin is set in 1991 Miami, 15 years before the original series, as Dexter “transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” according to the official synopsis. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcements’ radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Dexter originally aired from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime, earning four Emmy nominations for best drama series, with Hall garnering five nominations for best lead actor in a drama. After an eight-season run, the story continued with a limited series, Dexter: New Blood, that debuted in 2021. Showrunner Clyde Phillips returns as showrunner and executive producer of Dexter: Original Sin.

I love Dexter in any form and the new cast does resemble the old original wonderful cast. I look forward to seeing the new show.
Loving the casting, but I don’t hold out much hope it gonna be good.
Just let it … [hang’s head & sighs]
Ok. If the story is worth telling, it doesn’t need an attached I.P.
However, that said, let’s be real…
I’m so excited to see the aggressive R-RATED reboot of The Walton’s…
…that tagline with the Oozi-holding matriarch saying “Good night… *BANG* Johnboy…”
Chef’s Kiss!
And I’m really looking forward to Hulu’s version of the soft reboot of Manimal but set on Mars in 2097 with Helen Merrian as the voice of Remy the French Space Owl.
Truly, peak television. Bravo.
Love the Manimal reference.
The problem is there are only a finite number of story types and character types. Everything has already been done. So anything new can only ever be a version of something we have already seen or read.
I have one question about the show: why?
Cause people will watch it
I agree on why. Money should be spent on something original.
They’re afraid to take a risk with something new so they dig into the IP pot and find something that has had success that they think they can piggy-back off of to make fresh money.
I guess 29yo Patrick Gibson is baby-faced enough to play a 20yo. Sure fine.
As a former James Remar fangirl, I give my seal of approval to Christian Slater. ;)
This is the best news! Plus – the picks for cast are great! I can’t wait.
Wow! looking forward to it. I didn’t see when it will air?
Was only just announced. Now they need to build sets, sew costumes, write scripts….
Do you remember that argument Jordan… listened to from Danny about the one sheet world? [I don’t care if people find the dialog sing-songy intelligence and pretentiousness.I still like it, but it’s a cogent argument to the situation we’re witnessing.]
The actors and the writers are brilliant. Is the range and are entertaining. But honestly I don’t care if Rosenkrantz & Guildenstern are dead…
*They have range…
Definitely can’t wait !!!!!!!
Can’t wait but will it have more than 1 season?
Can’t they come up with something new rather than making sequels
All tv channels are not coming up with new ideas
Dexter was a deeply complex character. Michael Hall had the ability like Julie benoche to express various emotions just by the squint of an eye. It’s going to take a extraordinarily good script and a well versed actor to pull off this prequel. How about kyle galler in the role?
Are you Kyle Galler?
No 2nd season of Dexter: New Blood…??
It was a limited series
Seemed to end with finality
Just leave the franchise alone. It has t been good since season 4 and no New Blood wasn’t any better. Not to mention Anthony Michael Hall played teen Dexter in flashbacks. lol
I wonder if Michael C Hall will narrate the show? Or at least the first episode and last maybe. 🩸
Lol… Young Dexter… this fall on CBS. 💗😄
(sign) just go ahead and make a story about young Leroy Jethro Gibbs hunting down young Dexter Morgan… You’ll save a ton on production costs too…
At least New Blood had some potential
I had the exact same thoughts !!! Ha Ha… Maybe young Dex can head to Kuwait
Sometimes a story is best left to occasional anecdotes, rather than being “fleshed out” into a ten-episode slog. We KNOW where Dexter winds up, so where is the narrative tension?
.
As with all prequels, these producers were obviously so preoccupied with whether or not they COULD that they didn’t stop to think if they SHOULD.
Because the sequel did so well… This feels like something that belongs on the old CW. Still, will tune in if only for Slater
This could work! Dexter was a great show, and it held it’s audience until the end, now the only question is will the Network give it time to build an audience, or will they trash it if they don’t get huge ratings from the beginning. Sequels take a little more time to build until the audience can let the image of the old characters go, and their mind replaces them with the new. I think that given a little time this could turn into a show with multiple series, if, that is, the network gives it time. I won’t hold my breath.
What happened to the actor who played him as a young Dexter on the last Dexter series??? He was perfect for the part!!
So the new trend is making shows about older characters. Young Sheldon. Young Gibbs. Young dexter. How about some Hawaii Five-O Jrs? Criminal Minds Jr? A Nurse Jackie prequel? … why??????
I wish they’d scrap it all and make a Dexter film or series based on the far-superior novels instead of the great-but-flawed TV version.
So we are supposed to believe this 29 yr old actor will look like he is 20 yrs old to play Young Dex?? LOL
29 year olds play high schoolers all the time.
Well, at least they’re not using the guy who played Harrison in the sequel
As someone who still has an I Heart Dexter sticker (complete with blood splatter!) on my car, I will watch anything in the Dexterverse!
Because a lot of these shows now are just content fillers. There are so many series it’s hard to keep them straight. There are some good series for example the bear but when you consider the number of platforms it’s become a watered-down Content driven Market and people reflect back on what they actually remember as being something that had substance.
