It was a comedy series all along.
Disney+’s latest live-action Marvel series, Agatha All Along, plans to compete as a comedy series — and not a limited series — at the Golden Globes and other upcoming awards shows, our sister site Variety reports.
Given that FX’s Shōgun had to indicate that it had more seasons planned in order to switch from the 2024 Emmys’ limited series race to drama (where it wound up dominating), Agatha‘s choice to compete as a comedy series would seem to point to a similar, renewal-type announcement in the weeks ahead.
Submissions for the awards season’s leadoff hitter, the Golden Globes (to be held Jan. 5, 2025), are due today.
Agatha would not be Disney+’s first Marvel series to “pick a side” when competing for kudos. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, for example, competed as a drama series, while Hawkeye vied as a comedy. Many others, though, including Agatha‘s sire, WandaVision, plus Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel, entered the limited series race.
The Emmys define a limited series as a program “that tells a complete, non-recurring story. The story arc must be completely resolved within its season, with no on-going storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.”
The Globes and SAG Awards similarly dictate that a limited series “must tell a complete, non-recurring story” and “not have a continuing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons,” while, of note, SAG says a comedy series “must be primarily comedic and marketed/ advertised as such.”
Who from Agatha All Along would you like to see conjure some nominations at the Globes et al?
I hope it continues in some fashion but part of me wonders if it is competing here just because it feels it might have a better spot against comedies than limited series. I would think any continuation might have a new title with Agatha taking on a supporting role to Wiccan in his search for his brother or something. But who knows? Maybe they would do it as Agatha All Along season 2 despite the shift in focus.
I’m not sure it had enough stand out comedy moments to win in this category and honestly, I can only really see Hahn getting a nom. Everyone in the cast was great but I dont think it can compete against the usuals who will get nominated.
I mean if The Bear which is so clearly a drama can win in the comedy category then so can Agatha
Wiccan & Agatha (Deceased)
Renew it for season 2 and please begin production as soon as possible for we don’t have to wait two years.
I’m not sure it really has a shot either way. I wouldn’t consider it a comedy; such as I wouldn’t have considered The Bear a comedy either, but we know how that went. They seem to be playing loose with what they define certain shows as, in the hopes of getting it better odds during awards season.
.
Though, I too hope that this is a good sign that a season 2 is a possibility, but if the VisionQuest series (or whatever they’ll call it) is the conclusion of this trilogy of shows than I’m not sure that by the time a S2 of Agatha comes around it will be about Billy & Agatha looking for Tommy. I would assume that by VisionQuest the family would be together & somehow/some way Agatha would be corporeal and would be flying solo as a coven of one.
.
And no matter what, Jac Schaeffer should definitely be involved in whatever these characters go.
The solution is to replace comedy and drama with categories based on the average length of episodes.
I didn’t know Hawkeye competed as a comedy. I think Agatha is better suited and more of a comedy than The Bear. I hope it continues but it could continue with a different name.
I really don’t see it having a shot in comedy. Just looking at the Golden Globes for example
The Bear, Hacks, Abbott Elementary, and Only Murders in the Building are likely locks for nominations. Same for the actresses in the first 3 with Gomez a strong possibility for OMitB.
The probably Nobody Wants This (also for actress) then the last slot going to either Palm Royale (again also a contender for actress), Shrinking, Bad Monkey, or English Teacher.
Ironic how it was Billy All Along this time.
The Emmys need to combine the drama and comedy and drama categories. While Agatha had comedic elements, and is worthy of awards, it is clearly a drama. Competing in comedy will make it a fraud, like The Bear.
If they plan to have more seasons, I’d like for the title to change anyway. We had WANDAVISION, AGATHA all along, soon VISION quest; the next title should have either Wiccan/Billy in the title, the collection would be nice
Sorry but the lead actress and young guy(copied Penguin’s casting choices with much less talent)were horrible. The supporting cast kept my interest. Scarlet Witch was good because the leads were good!
look, we all know that a new show is going to be called Something Wiccan this way comes, about Wiccan looking for Tommy with Agatha tagging a long here and there
That’s fantastic 😊
Why did I not think of that??
I wish there was a ‘Genre’ category for SciFi/Fantasy or Supernatural stuff. The storytelling for that is as unique as either comedy or traditional drama.
There needs to be a Best Genre TV (Sci-fi, fantasy, horror). Otherwise, as great as Agatha was, it has no chance of even being nominated. Looking forward to Season 2 news!
They need to tighten up the definition of a comedy. Both Agatha and The Bear are dramas, not comedies.
