Panamanian Golden Frog

Golden Frogs are found only in the Pacific lowland forests of Panama, the golden frog has skin toxins that may cause hypertension, hallucinations or paralysis. Predators quickly learn to associate the colors with an unpleasant experience and avoid contact with the diminutive creatures.

Photographed in environs of El Valle, Panama. The highland variety of this frog as depicted here is bright yellow. Lowland A zeteki are more dingy or "dirty yellow." it is likely that the highland form of this species is now extinct in the wild as the frog has not been seen at any historical localities for nearly 5 years (since 2007). addendum: it is now likely that the species in its entirety may now be extinct in the wild (2012).
