Because Bristlecones are slow growing (a hundred yearly growth rings to the inch), the environment harsh and the wood filled with preservative, the "dead" wood is all that keeps the bark covered cambrium layer (the living pump) upright and the tree alive. The color in the heartwood is caused by the weathering of the sap which is unique in it's chemical characteristic and helps prevent rot.

There is an awesome beauty in old age, in the broken and twisted forms that record a long tough time on earth, and in the life that goes on in spite of it all.
